“Carnegie, who famously believed "the man who dies thus rich dies disgraced" and gave away most of his wealth, funded 2,509 libraries worldwide, including two more in #Winnipeg: St. John's and Cornish, both of which opened in 1915.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
'Free to All': Winnipeg's 1st public library opened 120 years ago | CBC News
Carved into the Tyndall Stone above the arched entrance to Winnipeg's first public library are the words "Free To All" but for the past 11 years, it's been closed to everyone.

Some of us could argue the present of urban North America already is.

Is the future of urban North America in Canada?

(I'm sure someone will hit me with a good argument about Mexico, which I could also believe)

Montreal has incredible cycling infrastructure. Way more bike lanes than Vancouver, Bixi is everywhere, and you notice more bikes locked up on the sidewalk.

Did you know Toronto has 15 permanent bicycle counters around the city? I have created a portal that should be updated monthly when the city updates their open data. It's live now at: observingthecity.ca

Fun fact: despite the enormous land mass, the population-weighted density of Canada — basically the density experienced by the average person — is the same as Denmark and close to the Netherlands.

Canada and Denmark are 3,000 people per km², while the Netherlands is 3,400/km².

Like many other Canadians, Jim Goulet fought for walkable streets.

In Surrey, BC, busy 108th Ave divides apartments from the shops that serve residents’ everyday needs.

On Jan 24, 1974, Patricia McCallum and her 4-year-old son Patrick were crossing 108th at Oriole Drive in a marked crosswalk. ...

The data on #Bikelanes are clear & consistent: GREAT for cities in just about every metric you can think of. So why are politicians across Canada attacking them? We dig in with @bikecalgary.bsky.social's Doug Clark & Alyssa Quinney

This is good —the Mayor of Yellowknife NWT in Canada’s far north weighs in on “Car Bloat” (truck bloat actually) and its many big costs & consequences (thanks @davidzipper.bsky.social for heads-up). And like most who dare tell the truth about that, he’s taking flack.

My column today: From residential zoning policy to trees, transit, Portage and Main and others, the summer 2025 was a season of urbanist change in Winnipeg. Some with immediate impact, some with impact in the future, and some are still a work in progress. www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/anal...

BEFORE / AFTER.

Here's what the school pick-up was like BEFORE at our children's elementary school.

A real rodeo. Lots of near misses. Cars parked in the crosswalks. Distracted drivers pulling up just when hundreds of kids are trying to arrive on foot or by bike.

This June we changed things...
