1. On political gaslighting. Yesterday Jenrick defended his comments on Handsworth by lashing out at 2 pieces of work I was centrally involved with to imply it's people like me who are divisive, not him...

Thoroughly enjoyed my week at @gladlib.bsky.social.

Strongly recommend to anyone wanting to do some reading, writing or just pondering, in the stillness and companionable quiet of a Grade 1 listed reading room, surrounded by Gladstone’s own books.

Great food too.
An Edwardian library reading room, with shelving, wooden desks, armchairs and a wooden gallery above. An Edwardian building of red stone with a central section and two wings on the left and right.

'It is no secret that student attendance has plummeted in recent years, with near-empty lecture halls a staple of the post-pandemic world.'

Really? I lecture to all our 1st years. Lecture hall is full, not near-empty. Student engagement picked up last year and (early days) seems stronger again. 1/2

Honestly our first year and foundation year are an absolute balm for the soul. All years really. But they are particularly thoughtful in what they want to get out of their studies this year.

There's also a deeper problem here of 'history' as some repository of 'lessons' for current policy makers. Doesn't work like that for a whole range of reasons, many of which were clearly laid out by the late Ernest R. May.
And no, history doesn't 'rhyme either'

I'm all for awareness weeks but this week is the awareness week for three things that have, separately and combined, completely shaped my life and all I can say is I'm very, very aware of them all. Solidarity to all for whom awareness days/weeks/months can bring up some hard stuff.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Historical research often comes at an emotional cost.

To commemorate World Mental Health Day, here's a discussion from our archives on how ideas about wellbeing can shape the historian's craft in radical ways.
Emotions, Vulnerabilities and Care in Sensitive Research

Enjoying Celebrity Traitors but the funeral is just reminding me that the wake on #TraitorsIRL was one of the best things I've ever seen.

Wisdom, moral imagination, an enlarged sympathy for those who live or have lived differently from yourself. This is what you get from studying the Humanities. So quite important, actually.

I'm honoured to have been elected one of three incoming @royalhistsoc.org council members for a three year term. The Society does an immense amount of good for historians in the UK and beyond and I am flattered I get a chance to play a part in that work.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

So grateful to @sonjatiernan.bsky.social & editors of #Saothar50 for opportunity to write on Irish housewives. By mad coincidence my ma was interviewed about her everyday experiences in 1968 & that features in my new article. #familyhistory #femaleactivism
