Starter packs, the weird “everyone follows back everyone” culture of early Bluesky, and a quiet disdain for weird twitter/left twitter created a hall monitor’s paradise on here. The only way to restore order is to give a lot of people wedgies, I’m sorry it’s come to this

DS9 is heavy on shots that would "need" to be redone in modern CGI. After seeing the cost of doing TNG, and considering smaller fan bases of DS9 and Voyager, they decided the bang wasn't worth the buck.

There's at least one fan-made upscale that's pretty good. You'd think they'd just do that...

Old enough to remember when kids being anti-semitic was the basis for a federal government assault on higher education

1996? That can't possibly be retro. That was only 2025-1996=29 years ago.

Fuck.

Unfortunately the moderation philosophy of 4chan is mostly just to keep things on topic, and there are lots of ways to drag a bigotry into whatever topic you're thinking about.

The slightest bit of backbone, a moment to reconsider the implications of their philosophy could have prevented all this.

we, (well, I) determined that the moderation load would be so high as to be effectively infeasible for most communities.

Anonymity also brings out the worst in people, and unless you clean up after their mess you'll simply attract more of the worst.

Moderation itself is crucial for community!

At the time I worked for a leading forum software vendor. If you were online in the early, 2000s you've used my work.

4chan emerged around the same time that we were considering completely reimagining the way we built our forums. After intensely studying anonymity though,

I'm not quite an originalf...riend, but I am an oldfriend, desu. The racism before and after Stormfront was palpably, distinctly different.

The anonymity potential of ephemeral posting is very freeing. You can express thoughts that you can't otherwise express in polite company.

4chan didn't even sound like 4chan before the Stormfront BUGS (Bob's UnderGround Seminar) invasion, and everyone knows what those literally-KKK guys sound like: your acquaintances in 1980s Alabama.

if only m00tykins had just the slightest bit of moderation competency...

Do you honestly believe that people are coming to America to attempt to get free healthcare? That's dumb. It's counterfactual. It's a talking point. Utter complete nonsense.

Treating people that come into a hospital is not the same thing as paying for the entire world's health care. Fuck off.
charles.capps.me
Well it's a good thing that we don't do that and that no one anywhere actually thinks that's a good idea or wants to do it.
charles.capps.me
No your post said we can't pay for it. We can.
charles.capps.me
The problem is that there are people out there that would seriously actually do what you're joking about.
charles.capps.me
Perhaps then your own healthcare should be "free," paid for by taxes just like so many other places in the world.

We should improve our society somewhat.

YES HI HELLO THE WORD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS TAXES

Taxes are the mechanism by which the government raises money in order to do things for its people.

Many countries all around the world are able to pay for this with just simple taxes on people that can pay them.

This is not a difficult concept.
charles.capps.me
No actually it is entirely reasonable for every single government to pay for doctors to take care of their citizens. Many places around the world have demonstrated that this works very well.
