“Israeli” ceasefires only ever apply to the other party. They’ll continue to kill whomever they want, whenever they want until they are stopped. They see themselves as occupying an altogether different moral plane than their enemies, like any colonizer.

Fun fact, in the original text of Exodus, the plural form is not used. It’s not a plague of frogs. It’s a plague of frog. A plague of frog that will cover all of Egypt. Frogzilla. One Kaiju frog.

Also if you completely ignore all the technobabble being wrong, and also know all the lore behind how it became what it was, it's actually pretty good. If you don't know everything about what's happening though, oh my V'GER, you're going to be so lost.

If anyone out there in the nutso conspiracy tracker crowd knows how to find a copy I'd love a pointer. I couldn't find it in the wayback machine.

Add in the simple ability to create like-minded groups and we get the recipe for both magic and madness.

I really wish that Prester Jane's "Compaction Theory" stuff was still online. Self-affirming groups can radicalize incredibly easily, and it was an amazing take on the phenomenon.

It really can't be emphasized enough how unlimited information access mixed with a constant firehose of bad news mixed with the expectations that getting likes and shares for your opinions makes your opinions worthwhile have combined to turn our brains into lukewarm pudding.

Seen a bunch of different bits of content being like “it’s just paid agitators and bots trying to divide us“ and I’m like, no, I think people really are just actually that stupid

All of this is to say that Portland political humor, which often makes the national stage via absurdist protests (like right now) or statements of solidarity that other groups find baffling (like the Wall of Moms during the BLM protests), is steeped in this same sense of creative frustration.

Oregon has, as an undercurrent, what I would call the “libertarian impulse” — the need to say ‘f*ck you, I’m doing my own thing.’ That’s why, running alongside what people imagine to be the sort of hippy dippy stuff, are separatist movements/overt white supremacists. Cc: @sethcotlar.bsky.social

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

Don't make me tap the Robert Pattinson quote, Leto.
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an assholes,” Pattinson said in an interiew with Variety in November. “You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”

There is no dialectic, no synthesis between "reality exists and we're trying to deal with it" and the absolute rejection of reality and insertion of unreality, you stupid, conceited fucks.

There is no middle ground!

It was antifa and the feds that did all the violence, those loyal patriots totally didn't do anything at all!!!1

These people can look at the video of Ashli Babbit being shot and killed, with the full context, and still consider her a patriot and a martyr instead of a dumbass.
