As a fashion historian, I will die on this hill: the point of having blue hair and nose rings (or spiky nails or stripper heels or tattoos or an all-black wardrobe) is not to look pretty or cool. It's to look (and feel) powerful--something many young American women crave right now. And it's working.

So far as I understand, though, it comes from a similar place - people seeing characters who, like them, weren't white. Characters with agency, with stories that weren't centered around their ethnicity.

Ever since watching Dropout's "Cartoon Characters who are invited to the Cookout" Smartypants episode, which specifically points out that Piccolo will be there by default because he is obviously Black, I had my desire to read more about Piccolo's Black identity reignited. I just find it fascinating.
