I think it’s a delicate balance.

Pointing out their stupidity and incompetence helps to undermine their attempts at instilling fear even as it risks inaction.

I think it helps to realize that their stupidity is itself also very dangerous (as point 2 hints at).

"The administration is doing dumb things, this proves they will fail."

1. They are not as dumb as you think in the areas that matter to them: grabbing power.

2. Being dumb is a feature, not a bug, of authoritarianism. Hiring based on loyalty does that.

3. This thinking is what leads to inaction.

He wants X thing so he gets X thing is not a given. And to me that's the thing to uproot from people's consciousness. Because we're less than a year in and many people seem already defeated.

This is obviously terrible.

But… I have to admit that every time I see the abbreviation for the Bureau of Land Management, I immediately think of this:

You’re missing the point here. It’s not about how many people are circumcised. It’s about the fact that circumcision has long been associated with Judaism by most people, and there’s a long history of antisemitism in the discussion around circumcision.

Matthew Hess is the San Diego-based intactivist who wrote the San Francisco initiative. But he is also the author of a comics series-the first issue of which came out a year ago - that, to the Anti-Defamation League's reading (and to my own), trades in anti-Semitic tropes to make its anti-circumcision case. It is bad enough that the hero, "Foreskin Man," is a strong, blond Aryan-type. The villain is
"Monster Mohel," and as you can see from the illustration, he is straight out of a 19th-century pamphlet (note the nose, devious expression, hat, and even fingernails). "Nothing excites Monster Mohel more than cutting into the penile flesh of an eight-day-old boy," the comic says.

It’s all so incredibly stupid

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

Statements like this from prominent politicians can have a much more positive effect than someone constantly yelling about the Hannibal Directive whenever Oct 7 is brought up.
christiaanptr.bsky.social
There’s some real virtue signaling going on in the comments here.

Of course Oct 7 did not happen in a vacuum, and of course decades of prior oppression led to that day.

But, this is still a statement, from the leading candidate in the largest U.S. city, that centers the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

Funny thing is, it’s not even world building he loved. It was language creation.

LotR and The Hobbit were sort of a demonstration of his theory that languages needed myths and legends.

The stories were just there to prop up his language creation!
On tolkien's Writing: Myth vs. Language (20.06.14
by Lesley Vos) - 2 Comments
Translated from Greek, "a myth" means
"a word". J. R. R. tolkien's understanding of the relationship between a word (language) and a myth is based on the statement that a language gives rise to mythology.
Tolkien did not address this issue explicitly and we can reconstruct his ideas only from his fragmentary observations in articles and letters. This situation arises because
Tolkien
dedicated far less attention to theoretical research than he did to practical language creation and myth making.
Moreover, myth making was for him a secondary phenomenon, while language creation was a primary one. Tolkien always emphasized the fact that myths followed languages. He was a linguist fist of all, although today most fans knew him only as a writer.

Coates’s line in his discussion with Klein that “sometimes we lose” really stuck with me.

Klein was talking electoral calculations. Coates was talking about those working for true liberation and equality.

To me, this is so much of the difference. Where are we actually trying to go? And how?

A lot of people making fun of Kennedy for blaming autism on Tylenol but en serio, how many of you talk disparagingly about autistic folks? because there’s a lot of “oh yeah he doesn’t know better because he’s autistic“ like it’s brain damage or something rather than a literal expression of diversity

Yeah, that makes sense. He’s also played all but one of the RC games this year, and I wonder if that was initially the plan.

Damn, I forgot it was 5… a bit strange, then. I’d feel like, of all the guys, having his 100th in SA makes the most sense. But maybe they’d prefer it to be against a top team!

It’s his 98th test, isn’t it? Would just be a bit surprised if they do his 100th as an away game.

A bit surprised to see Siya play this one. Means he’ll probably sit one of either Ireland or France?
