Not the main takeaway from the article – a sidenote, really – but this is why the Internet of Things concept terrifies me.
Black text on white background reading:

Ordinary American citizens are also feeling pressure from immigration officials for helping immigrants. Investigative journalist Radley Balko reported earlier this week about a lawyer in Texas who was asked for legal help by an immigrant family. Two days after he spoke with them, two men in civilian clothes—who never identified which, if any, law enforcement agency they worked for—knocked on the lawyer’s front door and questioned him about his assistance. The lawyer’s internet access briefly went offline while the agents were present, and they refused to give him their names or badge numbers. [light purple highlight] (As the lawyer told Balko, the suspicious timing of his internet outage ensured that the Ring camera on his front door could not capture the exchange.)

What makes me even madder is that there's zero reason a doorbell camera couldn't store hours of footage locally and upload it once the wifi is back on. It's purely a business decision that hurts consumers.
For context, I'm a former Google/Nest engineer who now works on local-only devices.

Ring founder: “I’m focused on: How can I get the highest density of camera coverage in a neighborhood matched with AI to make neighborhoods safer?…It’s not just hard crime.”

Just put this guy and the Flock guy on a deserted island together so they can surveill each other until the end times.
Ring founder 'backs the blue,' says AI is helping Amazon-owned doorbell unit fight crime

Not “now.” Sooo, tomorrow, or…
While most people will happily help someone find their lost dog, there is a concern about where this could lead. This week, the company also announced it’s bringing facial recognition to its cameras for the first time. Familiar Faces lets you register images of family and friends in the app so you can get specific alerts about who your cameras see.
The combination of Search Party and facial recognition raises the question of whether the Ring cloud could one day be used to search for specific individuals. Ring spokesperson Yassi Yarger told me that there are no plans around this for now. “Search Party was designed to match images of dogs to dogs captured in Ring videos,” she said. “It is not designed to process human biometrics.”

Amazon's Ring is adding facial recognition to its home doorbells and security cameras for the first time.

To identify people you know, it needs to run everyone's face in sight through facial recognition.
