This is actually an important point.

The consensus political goal that's so fundamental it practically defines what it means to have a successful society—improving living standards—requires an open immigration policy that's flatly rejected by today's right. But it's all they care about!
"immigration has to go up for our growth goals, but our policy is to bring it down"

uk politics in a nutshell
There is an actual interesting little deceit in the budget, namely ther have the OBR still forecasting based on increasing net immigration back to 300-350k whilst the Home Secretary is promising to bring it down from 200k, which does dissolve about half the headroom, but somehow we're doing vibes.

Former US military lawyers speak out:

"The Former JAGs Working Group unanimously considers both the giving and the execution of these orders, if true, to constitute war crimes, murder, or both."

more like 60% when you count the folks who are “meh” re: utter shitbird accountability
Like 30% of the country is absolutely enraged because they thought they were going to be able to be utter shitbirds without anyone being allowed to call them shitbirds, but here we are, calling them shitbirds.

Highland Park is a controlled sanctuary for America’s aristocracy, where they let the rest of us in occasionally, like fifth graders touring a zoo.

I’m not an expert in the law of war, but an order to kill injured people who were not posing a single threat to anyone would seem to me to be a possible war crime.

Such great writing. And so true.

Big oil folks lived there, including Dick Cheney & some of the Hunt oil family. The Perot kids, Harlan Crow, who loves to provide lavish perks to his good friend Clarence Thomas & whose brother is accused of financing a sex ring.

Highland Park is old money. Lubricated by time. The kind of fortune that’s been folded, reinvested, laundered, tax-advantaged, and passed down so many times that it’s become an heirloom unto itself. People here don’t earn their lifestyle, they inherit it in the delivery room.

At the northern edge of Dallas proper, somewhere between SMU and the first boutique Pilates studio that promises to “lengthen” you, the landscape shifts dramatically. Lawns become surgically precise; homes turn into a Garden & Gun holiday feature; cars evolve from grocery-getters into declarations.

Drive north on the Dallas Tollway past downtown toward the Bush Presidential Center and you can feel the class divide tighten around your throat like an imported silk noose.

There were two US citizens in the car. They were apprehended and detained for “obstructing” ICE by honking their horn to let people know ICE was in the neighborhood.

If you're trying to convince your friends to spend time on Bluesky rather than X, maybe show them this. X is not "the public town square" or about "free speech." It's "just what Elon Musk wants you to see." If you see stuff he doesn't like he'll step in to make sure you don't see it for long.
If you scroll on X, you are only being shown what Elon wants you to see. If you create content on X, no one will see it unless Elon wants them to.

New from me: Trump and his allies have decided that they are the real victims of the criminal justice system.

And while restrictive immunity laws make it difficult for actual victims to get compensation, Trump plans to just skip the courts and start issuing taxpayer-funded "reparation" checks.
MAGA's $300 million heist
Donald Trump supports immunity for cops and prosecutors. Unless they try to hold him and his allies accountable. Then we all have to pay Donald Trump.

The Epstein Files bill has a lot of protections in it to prevent Bondi from doing what we all suspect she's going to do: hold back or redact because of an open investigation or national security concerns. If she improperly withholds, she'll be sued, and SCOTUS will eventually decide.
