#SFFChat Q1: Here's a snippet from the first chapter of my forthcoming book (out next year!) where we find the protagonist fleeing.

Text reading:

Life was much simpler than stories told to children: it was one long nightmare where you never woke up.
With that thought, she urged her body to rise up. I can’t stay here.
Fear nipped at her mind as she stood, wiped the pine sap on a tattered green cloak, and once again staggered toward her shadow. She grimaced, forcing her feet to move farther from the city of Ereness. Farther from the Grateful Sanctum, the only place she ever called home. Farther from the terrors it contained.
Panic gave strength to her tired legs, pushing her east towards the Silver River. She staggered forward with no clear destination in mind. Maybe I can follow the river south towards Rasto, she thought as she pushed a branch out of her way. If they don’t catch me.

RIP Professor Tolkien, who died 52 years ago on this day, a little over a month before I was born. I've always played with the idea that a tiny bit of him traveled all the way across the Atlantic Ocean and found his way into me.
