Regret to inform the haters that it's another killer pod this week. @devintoshea.bsky.social on Pynchon, @trshboyoli.bsky.social on splatterpunk, @mbsycamore.bsky.social calling in to offer joy! COME ON, what more do you need?? (besides, I guess, the end of fascism but listen I'm merely a book guy)

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

I wrote an undergrad diss on Pynchon, an MA thesis on Pynchon, a PhD on Pynchon, and a book on Pynchon & I endorse this sentiment

"Pynchon’s work is often labeled “Postmodernism,” but it’s also interpretable as a body of left historical literature concerning antifascism"

Thomas Pynchon Has Been Warning Us About American Fascism the Whole Time
Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptations of Thomas Pynchon’s novels—first Inherent Vice in 2014, and now One Battle After Another in 2025—may be tipping the scales, with more first-time Pynchon readers f…

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

there are no 1960s anti-war protests in the streets; there is no aggressor except the fictional stuff put out on fox news and right wing media - "it's preemptive" - I don't know if it works that way narrative-wise

if I was someone hired to protect the substantial assets of Wash U medical, I might notice what @jamellebouie.net has been saying about immunity in trump's cabinet, and notice that Miller might be vulnerable to prosecution for a few different things

seems like a politics of revenge against people who live in cities, conducted on behalf of furious and demented republicans who will never visit those cities, and who are, at the same time, a little disenchanted with the movement

Very odd SCOOP:

Just weeks before the 2024 primary election between Cori Bush and Wesley Bell, Bell used over $35,000 in campaign funds to buy his friend's Dodge Durango, which the friend had failed to sell two years earlier.

He then hired the friend, who now drives the car.
Wesley Bell Used $35,000 in Campaign Cash to Buy His Friend’s Dodge Durango
The congressman from St. Louis put some of AIPAC's money to an unusual use. He now faces a rematch with Cori Bush.

Enjoyed this piece on Pynchon by @devintoshea.bsky.social which phrases a point @mattseybold.bsky.social makes - “Print is a Rent Strike” - in another way

I've been thinking a lot about how, now, thanks to our phones and screens, every waking hour of the day is subject to capital extraction through data, which is collected and bundled, and sold without you or I even knowing we labored. Reading a physical book breaks from that, and I sometimes feel physical relief in my head when I detach from the monitor; putting eyes on text that doesn't move, read a line, close the book, take a breath, stare out into the sky, open the book back up, notice something, then notice something about the room I'm in, or the park bench. Sometimes the relief of this feels like someone cracked open my skull and poured cool water on the hot machine; other times I'm too scattered and frightened about the future to do anything but sit beside the book while I scroll.

Absolutely amazing documentary I was lucky to see a showing of tonight at the Hi Pointe. Joining Walter Johnson, Gwen Moore (neither of whom are on bluesky) in the film to provide great historical context to Percy's one of a kind social justice action, is @devintoshea.bsky.social

Don’t get me wrong - we should do BRT all over here - it does work and it’s a great cheap improvement, but the diminished expectations is total bullshit - they had 4 years of Brandon to get this done

the trolley is possible, the chess hall of fame is possible, the stlpd needs state of the art training facilities and armament, but the Metrolink can only go east and west — it's too expensive to make it go north and south
