Yikes! That must have been a frustrating discovery 🫤

We've always lived in draughty Victorian houses and deliberately kept them draughty or made them more so. This house had a bad damp problem in 2 rooms, after chipping off the concrete coating the drystone foundation and opening things up a bit, after 3 years everything dried out.

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

We had to phone an operator in the state capital 3 hours away to be connected to the rest of the world until I was in high school. In the 1980s.

Completely different genre, but I love re-reading A Prayer for Owen Meany in tune with the seasons. Particularly the Christmas Nativity episode which is profound but also deeply deeply funny in places.

That reminds of all the State Fair Belgian waffles of my youth 😋

Oh no. What an awful thing to have in common for us. I am so sorry. Her poor husband- just devastating.

It's worse than you might imagine. No one was charged as they couldn't work out who was driving. And by couldn't work out, I mean one of tfe young men was a nephew of a local police chief. I read the news clippings recently, & my inner 14 yo felt-vicerally felt-let down by the adults in my life.

Not the point of this tweet, but the Allan Ramsay in Carlops was one of the best pubs ever anywhere, and I will forever mourn its loss.

There are four house martins feeding above my head. They’re six inches long and are about to travel 6,000 miles. That’s about 63 million times their body length. The lunatics.
