Hard to see how we will solve the housing crisis in Utah when city council members in the second largest city in Utah hold views like this:
Quote from a city council member: I believe housing affordability is one of the most pressing challenges that we face. Unfortunately, there is not much that the city can do to address this. I am not convinced that the zoning reforms suggested in item number five will tip the balance toward affordability very much and some of these reforms exacerbate other problems we already have.
Our city already has more than our share of multifamily housing and starter homes. These place a burden on our residents. I have seen many of my neighbors, who love West Valley, move from our city when they are ready to graduate out of a starter home because our city has too few nicer, more spacious homes. When I make decisions on the council, I try to consider how this will affect the city now and 50 or 100 years in the future. I believe a successful, sustainable city has a variety of housing options. We do not have much open space left for development so I would like to see bigger, nicer homes.

Somebody my mom knows only just now discovered via my mom that ICE isn't only arresting cartel members and drug dealers, and I don't know how other than one on one conversations we're supposed to break through a right wing propaganda ecosystem that keeps people completely disconnected from reality.

one of the giveaways was that the recent roundtable in the White House on the "antifa threat" included a guy whose latest book is called *Unhumans*, accusing liberals and leftists of being unhuman and encouraging ppl to drive them out of neighborhoods, forming far-right redoubts in their place.

It’s important to understand that the demonization of ‘Antifa’ isn’t just about kneecapping the enemies of MAGA. It’s about creating an opportunity to bring down the law-enforcement apparatus on anyone who dares dissent.

When something as painfully banal as HEAT PUMPS is deemed controversial by the right, you really have to question if their outrage machine might be a *bit* out of touch.

Let's spend less time worrying about the feelings of people who think their new HVAC unit is part of a communist conspiracy.

BBC decided to cancel a podcast on heat pumps deeming the topic "controversial" because it presented that the technology could contribute to net zero reducing carbon emmissions.

In 2025 an anti-science posture is not only valid, but required in any debate to be considered "balanced" 😬

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

"If you ask anyone in the city, they'd tell you it's hardly been quieter. But we asked 3 conservatives who live outside Portland and say they are afraid to visit what they think"

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

ICE drag girl out of car & body slam her to ground—then pin her face down & kneel on her neck.

"I'm 15!" she cries out. "I'm not resisting!"

Agents have now asked multiple area housing associations to unlock main doors—so they can go door to door.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

New from me at Cato: I go through the numerous and massive First Amendment and academic-freedom violations of Trump's proffered "compact" with universities and then talk about the mechanism by which it would be enforced, by way of what I describe as a "retroactive push-button guillotine."
Universities Must Defend Their Independence by Rejecting Trump's "Compact"
The Trump administration has proffered a “compact” to universities that would require them to surrender their independence and academic freedom. How many First Amendment violations can we identify in ...

ICE left David, a 17-year-old boy, stranded on the side of Interstate 20 after pulling over his immigrant father, Hector, in Mississippi.

David began running in the scorching sun after the car and watched as it disappeared from sight—soon headed to a Louisiana ICE prison.

Here's their story.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

Members of the Utah state legislature can’t conceive that the boards of trustees of state universities could be composed of people with a broad variety of views, including people who disagree with them. But then again, they rigged the congressional maps so badly that clearly they’re erasing dissent

A few other notable Dr. Seuss political cartoons:
Cartoon: Two men stand on a platform with an intertwined beard. One says "America First" and the other wears a swastika. A circus manager announces to the crowd:

Caption: And on this platform, folks, those most perplexing people... The Lads with the Siamese Beard! Unrelated by blood, they are joined in a manner that mystifies the mightiest minds in the land! Cartoon: a woman with an "America First" sweater reads to two children from a book entitled "Adolf the Wolf"

Caption: and the Wolf chewed up the children and spit out their bones... But those were FOREIGN CHILDREN and it really didn't matter. Cartoon: A man with a "Profiteer" emblazoned coat sells umbrellas during a flood to people taking refuge on rooftops. A swastika can be seen in the torrential rain.

Caption: Beware the man who makes a fortune in a flood!

Three key points:
1) The admin has been planning mass firings to begin in October since February
2) The work necessary to carry out mass firings is illegal during a shutdown, violating the Antideficiency Act, which carries a criminal penalty
3) This harms America, ridding us of talent and expertise
