yess that tension of "I should hate you but somehow I don't" is a big part of the appeal for me too! I like that they push each other out of their comfort zones, plus the backdrop of their countries being at war with each other adds delicious drama regardless of what side they're both fighting for 👌

I've accepted it's a no-win scenario. people are so eager to downplay romantic undertones for hater reasons that I refuse to be ambiguous about it. then the argument becomes "why can't two people be FRIENDS why does it always have to be about romance 🥺" like okay I'm done. leave me alone. jfc

idk man. I obviously value dorothea and sylvain being friends or I wouldn't be writing them as fwb-to-lovers so often. that interplay is the whole damn POINT. but some folks have weaponized that friendship against people who see it as lasting romantic love, and it's been really demoralizing for me!

also it's kinda wild to act like people in a committed romantic relationship wouldn't also consider themselves to be friends (possibly even best friends!) friendship is love and vice versa; romantic love doesn't diminish platonic love and vice versa. why are we pitting two queens against each other

eternal dorovain struggles:
- people acting like dorothea and sylvain aren't friends/framing dorothea's antagonism as a joke
- people accepting that they're friends, but treating this as the only valid interpretation/acting like shipping them romantically is a less deep way to engage w/ them

wrt actual content of a story: it annoys me when characters in a fantasy setting use modern therapy-speak or know how to eloquently articulate/intellectualize their feelings. or scenes that have a clear message that's informed more by our contemporary society than the world the characters are from

I'd really appreciate if writers these days took a look at their characters doing therapyspeak and whether that's appropriate for their work and their world.

By "therapyspeak" I mean speaking like this: "This is the emotion I'm feeling, and feeling that emotion makes me want to act in a way"
