okay here's the "dorothea falls through the ice" drabble I was playing around with yesterday. idk if it's going anywhere but I like some of what I put down :')

Sylvain has had nightmares about things like this; dreams borne of anxiety and fear, of loathing and dread and every other disease of the mind that plagues him. He used to suffer them in silence, grotesque afterimages flashing across the dark void of his ceiling as he laid awake and waited for his heartbeat to slow, for his breathing to steady. For sleep to take him and start the vicious cycle all over again.

Nowadays he doesn’t have to manage all on his own. Now there’s someone in his bed with him when he awakens in a cold sweat—a warm body that happily obliges when he reaches for her, the touch of her skin like a cool breeze on a hot summer’s day. Easy, love, she’ll whisper in that angelic voice of hers, slender fingers running through his messy hair. I’m here. You’re awake. None of it was real. Always the same dance, the same lines, but Dorothea is used to performing the same scenes over and over. Repetition is her way, and Sylvain never tires of it; he’ll slip out of consciousness with her name on his lips, her weight in his arms, her gentle words echoing through their bedroom.

I’m here. None of it was real.

But today it is, and she can’t help him.

Everything happens too fast. One moment Dorothea is gliding across the frozen lake that hugs the eastern side of Gautier castle; the next Sylvain’s stomach is dropping at the sound of ice splitting apart, a shrill cry piercing the air as the water swallows her up.

He’s trained for this, of course, but that doesn’t make it any less terrifying. His body moves on instinct, reaching for the rope and calling her name—deceptively calm, no trace of the panic that’s gripping every inch of him. It’s far too cold for the ice to be this weak, he thinks as the line goes taut and Dorothea answers back, her own voice understandably frantic. I’ve got you, he reassures her as he pulls her out, hand over hand, trying to ignore the inexplicable feeling that something isn’t quite right.

The dread follows him all the way to the shore, Dorothea trembling violently in his arms. Once they’re back on solid ground he helps her strip out of her soaked clothes, wrapping her up in his cloak. “Sorry,” she murmurs, teeth chattering. Her skin is deathly pale, wet hair clinging to slender shoulders. “I should’ve been more careful.”

“You were plenty careful,” he says, a small flame budding in his palm. “Accidents happen. I’m just glad you’re alright.” For now, he refrains from saying. They aren’t out of the woods yet.

Dorothea’s hand is icy cold when it lands on his cheek. “I scared you,” she says, leaning closer to the fire.

He curls his free hand around her wrist, eyes flicking up to meet hers. Beneath the perpetual cloud cover and the slowly setting sun, he can barely make out the green in them—it’s like she's been rendered in grayscale. “Nowhere near as scared as you were when you fell in, I’m sure.” His tone is flat; if he lets his emotions kick in, he won’t be able to control himself. He gives her hand a squeeze. “Take my gloves. You need them more than I do.”

“Sylvain,” she whispers, in that soft and ethereal way she does in the wee hours of the night. “I’m here.”

The corners of his mouth twitch upwards; he lets out a nervous laugh. “I know, Thea.” He presses his lips to her forehead, his heart fluttering as his collected mask gains another crack. They’re lucky: lucky that home is so close, that there weren’t any complications, that fire magic comes so easily to him.

if you find it annoying to hear "X is meant to be recruited" then surely you can understand how someone else could feel invalidated by hearing "X is meant to stay where they are." and it baffles me when FIC WRITERS in particular get mad about this. we're all making stuff up. it's the whole point
