my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

"The richest man in the world and the owner of the most influential social media site in US politics is a nazi who openly supports and amplifies other nazis" would, on its face, seem to be rather newsworthy!

Hey news people: I know you like to pretend this doesn't exist, but you need to pay attention to the Nazi drama on Twitter. Basically, it seems as if Elon just restored two major neo-Nazi accounts that were banned by his product head, and might be about to fire the product head for banning them

Thankfully few diseases have the combination of deadliness and contagiousness that smallpox has, but Europeans died from illnessses at very high rates in West Africa during the age of sail.

I don't specifically know about North America, but European sailors frequently died of diseases they hadn't previously encountered, especially in Africa. It's covered a bunch in this book.

If you are a woman who is 40 but looks 25 people will be like “Wow you look incredible for your age” and if you are a man who is 40 but looks 25 people will be like “It’s fine, I’m sure you’ll look like a grown-up eventually.”

I'm sure there's something in one of the Burnout games that's not too far off, but you could have fun distilling the experience down to "Drive bus fast or boom".

a lot of people want to read Trump and team's fossil fuel obsession as being about *money* but while there is of course a corruption element, it's primarily pure culture war stuff. even many of the big fossil fuel companies want to get into renewables because it's so obviously the future.

Coal production and employment in Wyoming has steadily been declining, much like the rest of the industry in the US.

Coal is a dead industry.

(Chart from here: www.uwyo.edu/cbea/wyoming... )
Graphs showing coal production (left) and employment in coal (right) for the state of Wyoming from 1983 to 2020 from the linked website. Coal production was rapidly increasing until 2008 and has more or less steadily decreased since. Employment in coal likewise rapidly increased until 2009, was stable until 2012 and has rapidly decreased since.

I'm surprised no one's ever made a video game inspired by Speed. "Keep the bus above 50 mph or it explodes" is a great premise for an arcadey driving game.

I think this kind of thing - people being unable to distinguish between what a *character* is saying and what the *game* is saying - really is a problem of literacy. But, like, Peter Thiel has a philosophy degree, his problem isn't illiteracy, his problem is he *wants* to reach bad conclusions.

Never read the comments, I know, but I'm amazed at how poor a lot of peoples' reading comprehension is. These comments are about Ghost of Tsushima. What they're complaining about here is *the point the story is making*. The whole game is about the protaganist rejecting his uncle's idea of honour!
A commenter says:
"So the idea of the first game is that it's dishonourable to fight people outside of an upfront duel. This is despite the Mongols having superior numbers and no issue with fighting dirty.

Fighting back in a smart way isn't something NPCs should be reprimanding me for."

A reply from another user adds:
"I always found it quite annoying that the first one would force you into making stealthy kills, then give you a moralising lecture about how dishonourable stealthy kills are"

Education is great and as a general rule people do become more literate and better at critical thinking as they get more of it, but I also think a lot of the things people say would be fixed by making tech VCs take more English classes are caused by motivated reasoning, not a lack of literacy.

The headline is bad, but the article itself correctly notes that this is not really about trade policy, so much as it's about:
1. Trump's repeated attacks on Canada's sovereignty, especially the 51st state comments.
2. Fear of being detained at the border.

Thiel has a philosophy degree from Stanford, although he does talk like an 18 year old who just discovered Aristotle two weeks ago, so I can understand why you might not guess that.

A lot of this behaviour seems to come from an understandable place; it's extremely nerve-wracking to tell someone how you feel about them, and rejection stings. But rather than reducing the odds of rejection, it seems to just reduce the odds of *any* interaction.
