Lovely article. I didn't know about John Harris' book, but his series of articles in the Guardian about SEN and his son are close to my experiences of the same thing. I'll check the book out.
Blog update: on w/e 2nd November 1985 The Cult reached number one in the NME Indie Charts with "Rain", a National Top 20 hit which has lived in the shadow of "She Sells Sanctuary" since. It's, er... really nothing like as memorable in general.
That is a shame, the EPs I have (see Assistant's pic above) were lovely post-Brighter Jangle pop and very dear to me. They felt like the kind of records I would make with sentiments I would write.
