I get it, it has a touch of that SNL style that made sax a sus instrument throughout the late 20th century college rock era. I fuck with that style, it doesn't get under my skin the same way, but as someone who immediately turns off horn-heavy music that gets too close to Zappa territory, I feel you

Oh man, politely agree to disagree on the sax! Generally love the Dead with sax, tbh; wish Branford Marsalis had played with them more in their later period (if more of his recordings sounded like 'Apollo at the Ritz', he'd be a fave and not just "the better Marsalis").

Here's my favorite recent Fred song (my all-time favorite is probably 2005's 'Susceptible to Ghosts', but I'm trying to keep at least a toe in the now): youtu.be/cNjHKti3nQ4?...

I mean, come on: without even thinking, we got Andre and Big Boi, Kendrick, Earl Sweatshirt, Joanna Newsom, Benoit Pioulard, Boots Riley, Liz Phair, Anna Waronker... I could go all day without touching the boomer canon and still never make it to her. GTFOH with that shit.

Feels weird to say since he's a homie, but Fred Thomas can completely murder me with one line. For modern songwriters, hard to beat.

Also, not be a boomer, but Dylan, Joni, Neil, Carole, Sir Paul (among others): all still alive. That dull millennial solipsist isn't even in her generation's Top 20.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

The Oregon Republican Party tried to help Donald Trump make the case for military intervention in Portland with an image of a fiery protest — but since Portland is calm, they had to fabricate one by merging old photos of police in Ecuador and protesters in Brazil www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Guys, every person you see on Fox News in a mask is just Robert O'Neill, retired Navy Seal and occasional Fox News contributor. He's the former Antifa, former Gazan, former gang member. His eyes are very unique.

I was on tour and played a set during a morning yoga class at the Palm Springs Ace Hotel on one of the Oldchella weekends. Probably the only time the median age for that class was 65

If any liberal politician so much as shifts in their seat when people say "abolish ICE", much less speak up with anything short of/contrary to that, primary that coward with extreme prejudice. They are on the wrong side of history and not fit to serve.

This welcome reminder came up in my feed today, a lovely song by Mitzi Linn, a client-turned-pal based in Eugene, OR. Tried to persuade her to let me issue her recordings, but she wasn't interested. Haven't talked in 5 years, hope she's well...

Originally, Missy Elliott's 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)' included the line "TOOT TOOT/Who's got the keys to me boot? *BOI-OI-OING sound effect*" in a Dick Van Dyke Cockney accent. How would the world have been different had that not drifted to the cutting room floor?

I currently live in the same town in Michigan as Fred, so I see him all the time! We've been working on a collab that's still gestating.

I saw Vashti's first-ever US performance, in fact! Except for some disruptive chatters in the back, it was transcendent.

All of which is probably funny to hear for anyone who's met me in my last five years making wallflower new age music

Which is to say, Bulb Records and what it wrought defined my 20s. Pat Yankee (AKA harsh noise legend Paranoid Time, back then fronting forgotten scum-rockers Vicksburg Stealers) introduced me to all this when I was a teen twee-punk babe in the woods looking for stronger stuff. Flipped my dome!

Addendum: shows by Pete Larson's '00s bands 25 Suaves and Danse Asshole (was too young and on the wrong side of the state to see Couch) were integral, along with Wolf Eyes/Quintron/Viki/Mammal, to my epiphany that noisy music could be a wild rock & roll party instead of lugubrious, po-faced goonery

Saw em three times out there, all fun, but that Dark Star was 🤯💀🥀 (though so too were the edibles)

Discussing my all-time life changer gigs w/a coworker. Fred Thomas solo has changed my life at least 30 times (probably will again tonight!) so I couldn't pick one, couldn't settle on a single Quintron show, and somehow forgot Battle Trance and Dilloway, but this feels accurate enough off the dome

I did a couple years ago but yeah, it's only worth it if you foresee your music getting licensed for movies and TV. I think I got caught up in folks always telling me my music is "cinematic" and was wishing on a star 🤣. So far, maybe I got an extra 5 cents from radio play or whatever.
dustinkrcatovich.bsky.social
Saw Pete & Co. open for Quintron last week and it ruled, as usual. Hypnotic! They've routinely been my favorite local live music experience since moving back, and should really be playing all the hotshot fests. I won't go into Pete's storied history (look it up!), but his now is just as important.

More 2025 recs to come, but not nearly enough people outside SE MI know Dr. Pete Larson's current work. This record from last summer may be my favorite example of it, featuringour boy Fred Thomas on guitar and Tom Hohmann (USAISAMONSTER) on drums.
