The fifth and so far the final book came out in 2011, same year as the tv show began. That would have given him eight years to finish a book before the series ended in 2019. It seems clear he'd lost interest in writing them well before the series finale.

They aren't beyond feminist criticism, but they aren't really nasty to their women either. ZZ in particular clearly likes Ellie, Roux and the Ples, and sees Haman as a grand tragic figure and Glemy as a dumbass.

Even if you stick to mainstream porn for straight men, that is not at all the only body type you see. You're absolutely right.

Though ZZ, CCA and F91 are a lot more positive on women than either Zeta or Victory. You could make a case for F91 being outright feminist.

Yeah, he isn't yet Ingmar Bergman, austere genius, but a talented director mostly making films for a domestic audience that wants a bit of comic relief with their existential suffering. I quite like the light comedy in some of his films of this era.

That poor, noble porpoise.

Dang, you've got great taste.

Too cowardly to put in Amuro, Char and Chan.

Maybe a Dracula adaptation, either the Hammer one or Coppola's?

This is from the 70s and has Tolkien seriously rethinking the Blue Wizards, who in his earlier writings had likely fallen like Saruman. Presumably there's also some discomfort at LotR's (proto-)Eurocentrism following decolonization. Love that woke Tolkien.

This is such an evocative piece of the Legendarium. The Blue Wizards (the "they" here) are cool and all, but Eastern humans fighting stubborn guerrilla war against Sauron for millennia, opening a path for Frodo and Aragorn, remaining forever unknown and unthanked...
Tolkien writing about the Blue Wizards, the last two members of the five Ishtari.

"Their task was to circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men that had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir up rebellion ... and after his first fall to search out his hiding (in which they failed) and to cause [?dissension and disarray] among the dark East ... They must have had very great influence on the history of the Second Age and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of East ... who would both in the Second Age and Third Age otherwise have ... outnumbered the West."

Plus stuff like mostly relying on characters and settings created in the 30s to 60s, so lots of straight white guys running around. The recent Dark Patterns comics have Batman bemoaning the city's corruption and lack of safety nets, but Gotham's still basically what Republicans think of cities.

Yeah, the real problems are the endless nature of the stories and shared settings that can't ever change meaningfully and irrecoverably. Heroes mostly just react, anyone who tries to change things must be stopped, nothing can ever get better.

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

ZZ was supposed to be a positive, kid-friendly show after the depressing Zeta, yet the only thing that stopped Tomino from killing every single little sister figure was the writers banding together.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow does such fun things with the genre's separation of the hero and player. Usually it's just done so the hero can joke about you trying dumb solutions to puzzles, but here Thomasina makes you solve puzzles you know should remain unsolved.

Is there a blocklist where being included is a compliment?

You know what, Thomasina? I don't think you should give your blood to that goblin, no matter how charming his accent is.
eijaksa.bsky.social
The saddest part is how that reaction isn't even about being unused to "difficult" endings, but part of a whole theory of art that rejects anything with a morality more complex than a Hollywood blockbuster.

Thank you, 00s edgelordism, for saving me from that.

Seeing the bubbly Eileen, who in the first game was so eager to be Kathy's friend and co-investigator it got a little stalkerish, spending half the game giving Kathy the cold shoulder is some good sequel writing.
