I just received updated restricted access NCHS natality (birth records) files through 2023. Does anyone have their code that they used to harmonize the files across years that they could share?

It's that time again. Papers by researchers with and without NBER affiliations, by early career scholars, and by researchers from under-represented groups, are welcome.

For #HeartMonth we're highlighting #HeartHealth researchers.

With UR CTSI pilot funding, Julie Ryan Wolf, PhD, MPH, & @elainelhill.bsky.social are examining patient 'care paths' (sequences of healthcare events) to understand racial inequities among older adults with chronic heart or lung disease.

Health #EconSky 📉📈 I am looking for someone who has worked with the CPS ASEC data and can tell me about the health insurance questions and all the ways it breaks down in 2014. Looking for advice on how to work with it. Suggest papers to read and personal experience too.

If I am taking them seriously and I have mentored 50 students, then 2%-tile is the top student, right? 5% is the top 2.5 students? Do partial students count?

Also, there were schools that have "exceptional" and "outstanding" as the top %tile and others that the highest I can go is "very good" 😝

elainelhill.bsky.social
still see you... and me...😝

it's not just the writing of the letters-- it takes me an unmentionable amount of time to submit each one

All you mentors out there-- I see you-- scrambling to write great letters for PhD applications before Dec 1.

Wondered the same. And even though I do google docs fine, I for the life of me cannot get people to initiate new google docs in a folder structure I have created in our shared folder 🫣

Thanks @mirya.bsky.social! See descriptives on when / where nationally salient partisan language appears in local politics (“climate change,” “gun control,” etc.). Identifiably partisan language is (1) common, (2) especially in larger cities, and (3) local D / R “slant” correlates with pres. vote.
Figure shows the relationship between the number of time members of Congress use certain partisan phrases, and how often those phrases are used in local government meetings. Plot shows city-level distributions of partisan language in local political meetings. Two figures showing patterns in the appearance of partisan language in local government meetings. Nationally salient terms are used more often in large places. The “slant” of partisan language that leans Democratic or Republican is correlated with local presidential voting patterns.

Now that I seem to have gotten new followers interested in my editor takes,

If you're asked to do a referee report and you're not sure if you have enough time, just quickly reply to the editor that you don't have time. Do not let the request languish.

Ghosting a request is the worst option.

As a grant reviewer, what do you really wish people would do/not do?

Not big things, like find a significant question/innovative method/be consistent with aims

Little things, like bold each acronym the first time it’s used.
