As the TikTok deal closes, I do find it horrifying how many people continue to center their worlds—and their activism—on the platform. So much energy spent guessing at and coming up with goofy euphemisms for words and it's like...the people who will own this are quite open about their beliefs.

Until I heard the author of this piece on On The Media this morning, I had no idea Larry Ellison's particular Silicon Valley society-controlling machinations were an outlier among his peers—because they're motivated by his devotion to the Israeli military. Cool guy to own TikTok & the OpenAI data!

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

combine with absolutely bonkers driving—giant u-turns at full speed on Atlantic, people blithely driving through stop signs and, increasingly, red lights...it's so clear that drivers in this city have utterly zero regard for other humans. Which is kind of required to keep a giant city functioning!
