I have a more unique perspective on this: being on an extremely low-end machine has made me a victim in this scenario more than others, I'm completely excluded from spaces & interactions and told "just get a better pc lmao" by both strangers & companions, it's a lot.

Easy example is water in many worlds: if you see water that distorts the things underneath it, it's using a grab-pass to do that.

basically, sampling the rendered frame to add more effects on top, it's how the shaders that add blur, refraction, distortion etc onto what's behind them work, alongside screenspace effects & other stuff.

It comes with an exponential performance cost as it means re-rendering the same frame.

I am tired of grab-pass overuse on avatars and worlds, my fps suffers far too much as a result. I often have to leave my friends and find somewhere else to be because their avatars and the world they're in were both made with no care for others.

I released on my GitHub a new shader : Frosted Glass.
The shader uses the scene's environment reflection (reflection probe) to fake transparency : The shader is actually fully opaque and doesn't use any grab pass.

Shelter implements 3D audio really well but gets shot down regardless because its not 2D. Devs from several world projects are trying to implement good audio upmixer solutions and the results are fantastic. Overall dont tell people to not use 3d, let people learn and build

So, for now, while some worlds are totally just set up to sound rubbish, if you're on the beta it's worth being careful with criticizing creators & worlds for this, they may sound perfect on live.

Personally, I've had a few rude & mocking complaints about this in my worlds that really hurt.

However, the steam audio beta often converts this audio into the audio you're talking about, fully 3d and without stereo. It will be fixed sometime but, for now, it's making a chunk of worlds sound terrible on the beta.

I tried to fix a world but fixing for the beta broke it on live instead!

Audio can be set up to have a distance fade but still be 2d and sound great, letting worlds fade out the music by distance without losing any quality; the audio still plays without any spatial source location, only volume changes.

people have been complaining a lot more about this recently because any 2d audio with falloff seems to become 3d on the steam audio beta

keep in mind that some worlds were made with 2d and have since been broken by that!
