Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.

I did it because the government isn’t.

This is what I found.
Just sent! Thank you 🙏🏻
Great 🧵! Really worth thinking about.
So here are some ideas

Write down 3-5 emotions that you felt strongly during the mobilization. Which one do you think will feel most accessible and motivating when you feel despair? Overwhelm?

Where else in your life do you access that emotion?
Which journalist was it? I'd like to make sure to support them.
She's actually been using Lightfoot as an advisor!
Protesters reusing a Lori Lightfoot campaign sign to write on the back of. Lightfoot has also been advising the Mayor of Broadview.
Would you share at which school this happened? I've been volunteering and I would like to spread the word about areas that need the most help.

Chicago: Report sightings of federal agents to rapid responders and the press. Connect with your neighbors, find a community defense workshop, and post know-your-rights signs. Attend a No Kings rally on October 18.

Resist. Our democracy is at stake.

As Trump sends troops to Chicago, we will continue to investigate and report. Readers have a role to play, too.

This is such an important thread for Chicagoans #onhere -->

Keep in mind that what is happening in richer, whiter areas has been happening with so much more frequency in those neighborhoods that are less represented by folks on Bluesky.
Rogers Park and surrounding neighborhoods were hit hard by immigration enforcement activity over the weekend.

There's no competition here, but I want to name that the same heavy, violent, fast-moving abduction pattern has invaded the southwest side about three times a week for over a month now.

It’s been said but it bears repeating: in addition to the people being abducted, all Chicagoans are being psychologically terrorized. Seeing feds driving/walking around and videos of violent attacks in places you know and love will fuck you up. Get ready, it’s coming to all of America soon.
This story is so important, but it does not explain at all why the State of Idaho would have any ability to put these children in foster care when both their mother (still alive) and father live/lived in Chicago. It seems alarming that there is no seeming relationship between this family and Idaho.
ICE killed their father. Now they’re in foster care.

Silverio Villegas, a single father, was fatally shot by fed agents after he allegedly tried to flee a traffic stop in Franklin Park.

His family spoke to the Tribune of their grieve and their fight.

Family of Chicago-area man killed by ICE seeks to reunite with his children who are now in foster care in Idaho
The state of Idaho took custody of the children a few weeks after Silverio Villegas Gonzalez was killed by ICE agents in Franklin Park on Sept. 12.

Between the Brewers and Mariners, who would you root for?
No one has any clue who is firing federal workers.
Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)
Very exciting, Chef! Disappointed you won't be making a stop in Chicago.
Motorcade for ICE or CBP? Who/what do you think?

“Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes….Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”

Absolutely gorgeous morning in Chicago.
This seems to be an image that was photoshopped and created as a joke.
It's terrible photoshopping actually, and was initially created as a joke.

That anyone is reposting that part credulously is pretty frightening, but I guess this is where we are.

“My biggest fear is going to the hospital."

Pregnant immigrants are terrified ICE will show up outside the doctors' office or at the hospital. So they're skipping the care necessary to ensure a healthy birth.

Some experience dangerous complications as a result.

ICE fears put pregnant immigrants and their babies at risk
Fear of deportation is deterring people without permanent legal status from critical care. Doctors are worried for their health — and the health of their pregnancies.

PRRI shared this post this morning and it made me angry. Then I looked at the survey methodology and realized the data was collected in March, more than six months ago, so it is now inaccurate.

Very few people will look more closely like I did. Disappointing. Transparency is vital in this moment.
Christians of color, non-Christians, and unaffiliated Americans are less likely to approve of Trump's handling of immigration: 39% of Jewish Americans approve, as well as 35% of religiously unaffiliated Americans, 34% of Hispanic Protestants, and 29% of both Hispanic Catholics and Black Protestants
I love your work, but why are you sharing a survey conducted in March without transparently stating that it is has been more than six months since this data was collected? It misleads people into thinking these numbers are still accurate, particularly about immigration.

Truth: Only ICE fired

Claim: She drove herself to the hospital
Truth: Paramedics found her
I do the same thing and had literally the same thought this weekend.
This is 100% the case and I think about this all the time with national media coverage. It's not just Chicago, it's everywhere in the country that isn't New York City or Capitol Hill and the White House.
If what was happening in Chicago was happening in NYC, there would be wall-to-wall cable news coverage
