New Projector Short! Good Boy (not to be confused with the others ones) is a microbudget horror film where the director made his pet dog the star, where the canine POV gimmick is pretty much the whole show. And he is indeed a good boy. 📽️ youtube.com/shorts/iylkL...

The world lost a genial man, a genius communicator and a supreme artist. I lost a friend - beloved Drew.

Rest in Peace, Drew Struzan

As a kid, I remember collecting them from cinema lobbies. I even followed them during their short stint as a paid magazine.

22 pages. That's how big my notes doc has become of LFF films over the week. Finished the last one. Will try to convert them into something, some even standalone reviews.

But first I need to get back into making things, which I had to put on hold, and feel increasingly anxious about.

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

Yeah, I've put in my notes my observation that the first half is very uncommon for her work, and the second is more what I expected. Alas here I gravitated towards the first part more than the second, although I liked the ending.

Just wanted to say a tremendous thank you to all the people who've spoken to me in the last few days, shared their thoughts and been so welcoming and friendly, and a big shout out to the BFI staff and volunteers as well. #LFF

And that brings my #LFF likely to an end this year - at least in-person, there's a few on the digital library I might get to if I have chance.

I think the best film of the 17 I saw was Hamnet, but my favourite is Del Toro's Frankenstein.

I think I liked this? Certainly more than I did Enys Men, where my viewing experience was like Homer Simpson watching Twin Peaks. This is a bit more digestible.

Sorry I didn't get to meet you, but hopefully you'll bump into me at some point!

Unfortunately not, today was my last day as I've had to tap out because my weekly travel card is running out, and it gets expensive to do single tickets. That and I've got work to do and videos to make, and not over-indulge myself.

Rose of Nevada: George MacKay and Callum Turner go on the titular fishing boat that vanished for years, only to find themselves transported in time, in the latest from Mark Jenkin. Shot in his usual 16mm, post-sync sound, it adds a dream-like quality to this strange Cornish ghost ship tale. #LFF

The Mastermind: Josh O'Connor plans an art heist, which then turns out to be not so perfectly planned in Kelly Reichardt's 70s-set skewering of the heist movie. The opening section of this is very strong, but it quicky loses steam in the much slower second half as O'Connor's life implodes. #LFF

Frankenstein (2025): Guillermo del Toro adapts the Mary Shelley story, that's perfectly suited for his sensibilities. Oscar Isaac is brash and manic as the creator, but it's an unrecognisable Jacob Elordi who most impresses as the creature. Beautiful, gothic, gory, and wickedly entertaining. #LFF

Today's #LFF was a double of two films overshadowed by other exploring similar themes at the fest. I thought Jay Kelly was better than Sentimental Value, and H is for Hawk isn't even the best bird-themed grief movie when The Thing with Feathers exists.
filmbrainbmb.bsky.social
H is for Hawk: D is for Disappointing in this adaptation of Helen MacDonald's memoir, where Claire Foy trains a goshawk after her father Brendan Gleeson's death. Unfortunately too clean it's depiction of grief and depression, and while there's lots of lovely bird shots, it's rather dull. #LFF
filmbrainbmb.bsky.social
Sentimental Value: Director Stellan Skarsgard wants daughter Renate Reinsve to star in a personal project, but has to settle for movie star Elle Fanning, in Joachim Trier's comedy-drama. Has it's moments, especially about dealing with trauma through storytelling, but a bloated run time hinders. #LFF

What an absolute treasure Diane Keaton was. Her wit never tired, nor did her style.

RIP Diane Keaton, 79. Credits include Annie Hall, The First Wives Club, The Godfather, Something's Gotta Give, Father of the Bride, Book Club, Baby Boom, Reds, The Family Stone, Finding Dory, Hampstead, Radio Days, Sleeper, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Arthur's Whisky, Poms, Manhattan, and more.

After the Hunt: A great Julia Roberts performance can't save Luca Guadagnino's cancel culture campus drama, where Ayo Edebiri accuses Andrew Garfield. Tries to hit every hot-button topic, but it says very little ultimately despite all the wordy, portentous debating. Reminded me of Eddington. #LFF

Exemplifying how powerful the film is, even one of the security people checking for phones started crying at the end. Easily one of the year's best films. #LFF
