Thanks, Daniel, for such a meticulous analysis. It offers many ideas and insights. From a purely biological POV, I found "chance and necessity" more transformative and maybe less obscure. You focused on the order-to-(dis)order part more than negative entropy, is this a more consolidated aspect?

My little book on Schrödinger's famous classic 'What Is Life?' is out! Offering the most comprehensive analysis ever undertaken of the book's origins, reception, impact, and legacy, it uncovers Schrödinger's motivations in writing it, and shows how it has shaped our current understanding of the cell

A reminder that the PhD program for EMBL is open for winter recruitment round. If you want to understand life at a molecular level and have a quantitative science (you don't have to have done biology - we love our mathematicians/physcists/chemists!) apply www.embl.org/about/info/e...

These findings suggest that self-directed eye movements in visual search emerge from early preparatory neural activity more akin to willed motor actions than to covert willed attention. This highlights a distinct role for unconscious neural dynamics in shaping visual search behavior.

Hello all!

New paper out on bioRxiv: 'Unconscious Neural Activity Predicts Overt Attention in Visual Search'. We looked at the EEG activity preceding the first saccade into a visual search.

Unconscious Neural Activity Predicts Overt Attention in Visual Search
Unconscious neural activity has been shown to precede both motor and cognitive acts. In the present study, we investigated the neural antecedents of overt attention during visual search, where subject...
