Diane Keaton had an amazing career, but this, to me, is her best scene, and also Beatty's best as a director.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

So it’s not that international box office doesn’t count; it’s that less of it is profit for the studio.

Within the movie industry, that’s because studios get (on average) a much smaller percentage of the box office from overseas ticket sales than from domestic sales for new films, in part because there are extra costs involved (dubbing, subs, and promotion in a dozen markets/languages).
