LA weighted density is denser than most outsiders expect. Northern OC as well
gspeng.bsky.social
If LA Metro means LA County, then my census tract density of 18k/sq mi is about 80th percentile nationally and slightly lower within county. Numbers look in right ball park.

"well what are the Democrats supposed to do" I don't know! They're supposed to know! I'm not the one who sought and obtained a political position that would require me to know what to do when the ruling party attempts to install the President as a dictator!

Wrapping up the thread about days I drove:
I drove 2 days during "a week without driving" and 2 days the week after. 1-2 times a week is a pretty normal pattern for me.
Stuff happens. My ankle was too painful for cycling (& kinda painful for driving). His rear wheel spokes broke.

Will we see you tomorrow? This is the 15th year of CicLAvia and the 15th time a CicLAvia route goes through Boyle Heights. BH is throwing a quinceañera party and we are all invited.

Will we see you?
Wave when you see us!

D walked home while I was waiting for my food. Husband and I walked part way home through the hairy intersection. When we got into our quiet neighborhood, he rode the ebike while I sat on the back as a passenger.
Tomorrow is CicLAvia so we plan to bike, train, bike. Then reverse.

Saturday, rode 0.7 miles to friend's house & carpooled to event 6 mi away. She ran an errand that required her car on the way back.
Husband & D walked to movie and texted that they stopped for tacos on the way home. I hopped on my ebike and rode 1.1 mi to meet them

Friday, I felt well enough to ride an ebike with higher assistance than usual. 20 miles ebike, 15 miles train. Husband and daughter walked to grocery store without me.
Daughter rode bus to school, husband biked to work (using his folding bike during commuter bike repair)

Went on a transit and bike adventure today with a friend who gets the occasional Friday off when they need to work weekends. 3 bikes on our train

Thursday, rested at home. Drove with husband after dinner to pick up his bike (that he left for repair on Wed) and shop at REI bc he couldn't find his REI card.

Oops. I drove 2 days in a week without driving.
What about the next week?
It started normal and car free until I twisted my ankle in a spectacular fall.
I drove to a LWVBC meeting & then to meet my family for dinner. (Daughter took a bus, husband biked from work). Drove home together

That stands out because I am ordinarily a car last person. But, the day before that, I drove to the train station and took a train+bus to UCLA. I didn't take my ebike bc I didn't feel safe leaving it locked by the train station so long. I didn't want to bring my folding bike into a crowded room

I drove on the week without driving bc I was delivering supplies for a SoCal Transit Month event. Another volunteer used his cargo bike to transport stuff from my stuffed Prius wagon to the meeting space (94 sign ins! Packed house)

So to summarize:

- There is a pattern where Vought makes the RIFs too wide, apparently to flood the zone with sh*t and see who will draw protests.
- They restore some people after outrage and work by us.
- But we are still left with many who remain fired at the end.

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.

I can't get over how the CDC layoffs are coming less than two months after the attempted mass shooting. The agency is being taken apart brick by brick. The public servants there do not deserve this.

Some of these people have now been fired and rehired TWICE since January. The current state of dysfunction is mind boggling.

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

Most US Growth Now Rides on AI—And Economists Suspect a Bubble
Jose Antonio Lanz
Wed, October 8, 2025 at 4:30 PM CDT 5 min read

What happens when artificial intelligence becomes both the economy's primary engine and its potential Achilles' heel? We may be about to find out.

Harvard economist Jason Furman recently said that AI investments accounted for nearly 92% of U.S. GDP growth in the first half of 2025. Basically, the entire American economy put its eggs in one algorithmic basket.
