I really like this pop art meets street art mural on the side of Dog Lovers. 57th/Crenshaw. There's a lot to look at.
Store wall seen from the side parking lot. Portraits of half faces of several people. Some facsimiles of generalized commercial painted signs. You have to see it bc different parts leap out every time you look

Slauson/Crenshaw (US Bank): composite portraits of real people from the neighborhood nominated to represent them. People who contributed to the life and culture of South LA. Starting newspapers, schools, etc
Woman's head and shoulders looking directly at viewer. She has a large gray afro, black shirt, dark lips in a Mona Lisa smile, silver earrings. African symbols and textiles in the background Another African American woman looks slightly downward towards the viewer through the spines of an actual agave plant. More symbols over patchwork colors behind her A black man with braids and a beard and narrow mustache. Diamond earring. He looks off to the side. Nipsey Hussle RIP

Next, we scouted out a mural tour of the Crenshaw Corridor that I was asked to lead. We found all the murals I read about and some new ones, too.
We saw the ones east of Crenshaw northbound, then the west ones southbound.

First, we got off at Fairview Heights station and rode the newly built rails to trails project. The bioswales with pollinator plants are great
A rail corridor with warehouses on the right and residential area on the left. The railway was replaced with a 2-way bike path, a bioswale of flowering plants, a wide concrete walkway. Shrubs on each edge. Some of the warehouses have graffiti art

You could call it the Humpty Dumpty playbook for the permanent destruction of democracy.

They know they won't be in power forever. So, they're breaking as much as they can right now, in the hope that whoever follows them won't be able to put it all back together.

NEW: @CDCgov hit hard by massive firings that several staff describe to me as a “bloodbath.”
Among those RIFd:
—leadership of the center for immunization and respiratory diseases;
—leadership of global health center

if i've learned one thing from doing union stuff while also doing other forms of organizing, it's that you're better off with people you disagree with who are nevertheless trying to do the same thing as you than with people you agree with who aren't trying to do anything

I dunno, feels like reaching the “hiding your neighbors from the masked secret police” stage of things in like 9 months doesn’t bode well for the next couple of years.

We rode the train back to Redondo Beach and I biked to my Dr's office in Torrance minutes before she closed.
The K line train and my ebike lets me access so much of LA without a car.
Scouting trip was successful and I will draw a map for the tour.

Time flew as we enjoyed sweet potato pie and peach cobbler. We biked past the Crenshaw Wall, a block of murals. Another day. We briefly looked at the Nipsey Hussle mural on the side of Fat Burger. Then we walked across Crenshaw to Hyde Park station, with homage to Nipsey

We were ready for a cold drink and dessert. Mr Dulan unlocked the back gate to store our bicycles. Inside, he greets customers under the watchful eyes of a photograph of his parents who started the restaurant 50 years ago
Man with white shirt and navy shorts leaning towards diners sitting at a table Wall painted aqua on the bottom, checkerboard tans on top. Photo portrait of an African American man and woman look down upon the dining room

On the way to Crenshaw Wall at 50th St, we ran into Mr Dulan of Dulan's Soul Food. He proudly showed us the mural he commissioned. He wanted to show positive images of black manhood and families. He's standing in front of a man in a Dodger's hat reading an Octavia Butler novel. Watts towers

You can see Sankofa Park rising up at the triangle where Leimert meets Crenshaw

Looking from across the street to see above construction fencing. Bronze ribbon rising several stories high. Will surround a future outdoor amphitheater for musical performances

An apartment building on Crenshaw south of Stocker appears to be incomplete. It's called Elixir. Right now, it's a single woman's head surrounded with roses. I didn't get a picture
gspeng.bsky.social
We biked north through Leimert Park neighborhood to Stocker. The single family home streets had mature jacarandas forming a green arch. This must be spectacular jacaranda flower season. Beautiful houses (with ADU construction signs). Small apt bldgs along Stocker.

We turned right at Vernon and went a block east to 11th Ave to see the tallest mural in the area on Good Shepherd Manor, an apartment building. This is a stunner
10 story tall painting of a Black Madonna and child. Mostly monotone grays. Partial Circle/halo around child in warm yellow/orange/red/gold. The halo glows

We turned back to the pleasant narrow part. The 5.5 mi rail to trails project ended up costing $130 M. But it feels very Cadillac infrastructure We cobbled together transportation, stormwater management, parks & environmental cleanup funds to pull this off.

Another view along corridor. sidewalk on right with pedestrian stencil, narrow bioswale, 2-way bike path, shrubbery and graffiti on warehouse wall. Pole in bioswale with green bike route sign
gspeng.bsky.social
When we got to the part next to Slauson, it got wider, but less pleasant. Traffic noise, exhaust and more intersections with traffic lights. But the bioswales are wider. More runoff from wider road. The curbs are broken periodically to allow water to flow into the bioswales.
Green wall with plants held up with supports on the left edge of a 2-way asphalt bike path. A concrete sidewalk is to the right of the bike path. A wide bioswale shaped like a V to the right between the sidewalk and roadway

At least every 1/4 mile, there is an access point to the linear park. Standing outside one of the access gates in a residential cul de sac, we were able to get photos
