I think perhaps it’s less that I disagree about the dialectical relationship of the monstrance’s definition by center and periphery (I do think there is such a relationship), than that I am most interested in how its use at Broadview is what defines it in its sacred shrine

Oh interesting; I love this perspective very much but I’m not sure I agree with this last point (that there needs to be a central place of permanent holiness as the generative point of the symbol)

As we see story after story of impunity, it’s really, really important to remember that accountability is the alternative to BOTH punishment and accountability. Ironically, punitiveness leads to a system where elites act with impunity. Accountability, for everyone, is the way forward.

Pepperdine University abruptly closed the show as at least a dozen artists asked to withdraw in protest of what they called an act of censorship.

In response to the school's actions, Mann and AMBOS requested that their works be withdrawn from the show.

Both artists told Hyperallergic that Pepperdine administration did not explain their decision. In response to Hyperallergic's inquiry, a representative for the school cited the works' political content. "Because Pepperdine's established practice with the Weisman Museum has been to avoid overtly political content consistent with the University's nonprofit status, it removed these two pieces from display," Michael Friel, Pepperdine's senior director of Communications and Public Relations, told Hyperallergic.

But I do think the Dramione stuff having a moment right now has, like Twilight and 50 Shades did, more to do with the desire for a very particular, very straight, type of kink that just keeps bubbling up in the market. (I'm not against this, but I would like "romantasy" to be broader)

Side note: lest you think this is a one-off, a sizable group of Catholic nuns, priests and lay leaders have announced plans to do the same thing — offer communion to detainees in the Broadview ICE facility — tomorrow.

NEW: Clergy are at the Broadview, IL ICE facility today — where clergy have been shot w/pepper balls in recent days.

UMC minister Rev. Hannah Kardon, one of those shot w/pepper balls in the past, among those asking to give communion to those detained. Attendees (who sent photos) say police declined
