Where do these people find the time to make such art?
Horror story in two words: Palmetto bugs. It’s a Southern gothic tale set in an apartment with neither a screen door nor a zapper.

Hey, start a garden in November, on no notice with little spare resources! That'll feed your kids!

I swear people don't think before they speak or type.
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer
These are people that don’t understand that gardening does not equal farming. Requirements are at a much larger scale. Land, seeds, water, time… skilled labor.
I have a strict “no politics” holiday dinner rule at my place. I’ve pointed my stepdad to the door and suggested he wait for Mom outside. (They were on their way out, she was in the bathroom, it was not his first offense that day, but it made my point)

Two years ago today, this little book that could launched into the world. I had no idea it would be nominated for several awards, becoming a Nebula and BSFA finalist also. The Inn at the Amethyst Lantern then led to a trilogy. The Secret of the Sapphire Sentinel is out this week.

I look at it as permanent decoration. And I started planning the ones on my back when I was about 10, so there was definite consideration about what and where.
That’s an amazing thing to grow up doing! Many items in my jewelry collection were made by my grandfather and dad, but I didn’t learn how.
The ultimate lesson my grandmother and high school physics teacher were trying to get through to me is that tattoos are PERMANENT*, so you should be absolutely sure what you’re getting and where you’re putting it.
*hand and foot tattoos frequently will wear off and fade, because cell turnover.
“On the tip of your nose” is arguably one of the worst places to have a tattoo. Just the one, mind. That has to be one of the worst “oopsie boopsie I got this tattoo when out with the gals” stories I’ve heard. The other, funnily, also features a butterfly and was the usual “I was drunk” arm tattoo.
🧵
When I was growing up, my grandmother would tell me about this old* lady who had a tattoo of a butterfly on the tip of her nose. It was a real conversation starter with the ultimate lesson of “don’t get tattoos.”

*She was old when my dad was a child, so I did math and guess she got it pre-1930.
It’s okay to still need to find an adultier adult to ask how something works! Sometimes, that adultier adult is younger than you, and that’s okay too.
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?
His buds should also be dragged across the interwebs.
There are several ways to just get another tattoo that completely covers that.

*4 Marine tours. Gotta divide by 2 for conventional Army tours. Divide by 3 for Army sad sack Iraq stop loss tours. Multiply by .66 for USAF tours. Multiply by 2 for Task Force tours. Multiply by 0 for USNR tours - those absolutely do not count.
