a vladdy homer off shohei is just so great, this is a brilliant world series regardless of how it turns out
You still get the test for awhile of defending with/playing against 10, which has its place, but if the red is early like this, the majority of the friendly isn't so prone to being such a write off.
Will sound like Oz-minded whinging but for the sake of keeping the examination of friendlies as one wants them to "normally" be, it almost makes me wonder if there's something to be said for red-carded players (unless they've done something really bad) getting to be replaced after 20-30 mins.
It's a rare case of Foord badly getting it wrong (not putting Kerr through), but there is the significant mitigation of having to run laps up to this point and the mind (even just after 35 mins) naturally not being sharp when it suddenly comes to having the ball. Again, that red card, ugh.
- Reading a bit of reaction, and in contrast to aforementioned midfielder (or CB being played there) on wrong side of 30, I'm (much) higher on Gorry here than others. Among other really useful things that nobody else is still as good as doing, there's this turnover that should've led to a Kerr 1v1.
- Even before that asshole of a VAR penalty at the end of a well and truly over friendly, and while the red was valid, the ref can ggf for booking an exhausted Foord for wanting to go straight to the bench when subbed late in a dying friendly. Again, just an asshole move from an official.
It's painful stuff given how recurring it's been these last 10 years, but the trade off of her age, relative ability at the time of playing out from the back, her set piece prowess (direct FKs and headers) and a CB dearth for much of that time made it worth putting up with and risking. No longer.
- ...friendlies tend to be as much about putting eliminating things as construction, and for that, case no. 3842731465729689 of Kennedy (now being tried as a DM) messing up badly should qualify for the former at this stage of her career + where the team's at. More Wheeler (among others), please.
Because of that, though, as much as rhetoric will say otherwise, I think this was a more useful window than the 2023 one against Scotland and England was. We need to figure out how to play with more of the ball, we eventually answered such questions fairly well against Wales, and, well...
...first 18 mins aren't to be dismissed, this game flipping on its head with that red card just added to that, and I can't lie, with time tight today, I fast forwarded quite a lot of it thereafter. Along with a damaging one for Agyemang and England's options there, this was largely a waste of time.
- Kind of expected pre-window the Wales game to be more tactically/strategically significant given it's going to be more the norm in what we're going up against, and how longstanding a problem taking charge of games is for the NT (mentally as well when favourites)/Oz football generally. While the...
(I'm not really disagreeing with the red per se, but that it happened was ugh in a number of respects. Few thoughts to follow.)
May as well repost this from the Luongo ACL thread
FINALLY caught up with the England-Tillies friendly and...holy crap, what an utter cunt of an event generally (throw in Agyemang's injury here).

Wait until Sussan finds about New Order.
Been having to save for other things until this week but just bought both books. 👍

Shohei Ohtani is the first player with multiple games with 12+ total bases in a single postseason

Only only player with two such games in a postseason career:

Babe Ruth

Whoever is writing the little blurbs in the Fox Sports App is getting sick of working.
Hard to implement – teams can always choose to pitch around hitters – but perhaps a rule making any hitters walked in extra innings who were previously walked advance to second instead of first. Basically an added penalty for multiple walks of the same hitter come extras.

I have 1 rule change for baseball while watching this... each team should only be allowed one intentional walk per game.

We want to see hitter v pitcher in these clutch innings.
This is absurdly good baseball.⚾️
“Our fine broadcast/podcast that was dependent on gambling advertisement but otherwise had no gambling material will now have some of the latter in order to keep the income of the former going.” And thus we have the latest step of enshittification.
…pods actually based on or at least heavily containing gambling discussion.

I’ve generally been in support of prohibiting the *advertising* of gambling on a common level, and I don’t know how realistic or practical it is to limit it to such gambling-themed media. Surely some nasty loopholes.
…insecure men, in the same pronounced manner alcohol advertising does.

But I always thought it was absurd and impractical to ban gambling outright, while its advertising on The Ringer pods don’t bother me so much a) when it’s generally without aforementioned BS vain overtones, and b) when it’s on…
That said, I’m myself somewhat conflicted about the issue of sports gambling. Not because I gamble – I don’t and it’s not my thing – but because my first big annoyance with its new prevalence was very much based on its particular style in promoting lame af ‘this is what real blokes do’ bullshit to…
