a lot of it is just young infantry soldiers and marines seeing non infantry get better barracks, chow, schedules, etc and them being angry at it. IME POGs don't typically take as much insult to it as the Infantry means for it to have.

I don't see it so much as a slur then as a descriptor. There are infantry, then there is everyone else; it's actually a pretty small club. The army can be hard and it can be shitty and the line drawn by "POG" is based on infantry getting a disproportionate amount of the shit end of the stick.
