Another passel of new followers (who are all of you listening to my ramblings?), so a repeat of my rules: no racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, or religious bigotry. The Confederates were traitors who fought for slavery & deserve a punch. “Equality for all” in my bio means exactly that.

In Paleozoic 1979, an NYPD officer addressed my first grade class. 47 years later, I still remember him introducing himself as a “peace officer,” despite the more bloodthirsty among us asking questions about shooting bad guys. This now sadly archaic job description is long overdue for a comeback.
They are no longer what was envisioned when the first urban police forces were formed (distinguished from “slave patrols”). They were described expressly as civilians who were employed to keep the peace.

I might be a school-trained chef in French technique, but I’m a friggin shoemaker (Google that kitchen epithet) when it comes to Korean food. I boiled oxtail & marrow bones for seollungtang (설렁탕) from 10am to 6pm, but never got the desired milky color. Kids loved it, don’t get me wrong. But still.

Agreed, but there’s always the 10 percenters. 10% of most LE orgs or agencies is staffed by puerile man-children with the impulse control of a kindergartner & the emotional intelligence of a third grader - & that’s charitable. Is there any wonder that DV is often violent & unchecked with that group?
I don't know anything about law enforcement training but I do think that if you go out in public with a gun on your hip and the ability to use violence on behalf of the state, you should have the emotional and cognitive wherewithal to deal with people saying mean things to you without killing anyone

It's slowed down enough that I'm making my managers fill out a semiannual self assessment, then we'll have a 1-on-1 to compare their ratings to mine. If you ever had to deal with an NCOER, OER, or fitrep, you might be chuckling to yourself right about now.

I’ve been asked why I didn’t go law enforcement, and instead went EMS after active duty. The bald fact is, I already knew cops to be trigger happy & unaccountable. It’s a very different story when the shooting range goes both ways & the “threat” isn’t a mom in a truck sliding in snow away from ICE.
