There were lots arguments involving a toxic former aunt at many extended family gatherings. I’ll share the tamest.

One of my Ga. Tech alum uncles was arguing about how then- UGA Coach Richt needed to be held accountable for the team’s arrest record. Toxic aunt screams “He‘s a good Christian maaan!”

These quotes also stuck out - he was SO much more than that one song and video, yet marketing and media tend to always make sure that creatively, many artists are known for one thing and one thing only. And that’s an absolute tragedy.

Listened to They Say this morning and decided to look up Kanye’s D’Angelo line. I had no idea it wasn’t just the oversexualization that got to him but the fact that it meant he couldn’t tell who was actually a fan of his music. He really cared about his art

A reference to D'Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, a song infamous for the video in which D'Angelo is nude.

The video led to D'Angelo’s spiral into substance abuse and long hiatus as he became frustrated by the over-sexualisation from his fans, his tour manager Alan Leeds said:

“I didn’t realize how vulnerable he was and how deep his issues ran. He’s cursed now with fretting over how much of his fan base is because of how he looked as opposed to the music. It took away his confidence because he’s not convinced why any given fan is supporting him.”

I saw some creatives standing up against Roisin Murphy in the last couple of days, people who had been long-standing fans and friends, people who said they had loved her personally, very publicly cutting her out of their lives.

That is the energy that is needed to defeat transphobia.
