NEWS: Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder is introducing emergency legislation that would delay ranked-choice voting, which is currently set to be rolled out in D.C. in 2026. His bill would mandate that Board of Elections conduct an assessment on what it would need to implement RCV.

A similar push failed during the budget talks. And, FWIW, BOE said Monday it was on track to have RCV ready by June...

Dozens of candidates already filed to run in the June 2026 Primary in DC with the understanding we will have ranked-choice voting.

Many DC residents already donated or signed petitions under the same assumption.

Changing election rules while the election is already underway is unfair to everyone.
🚨 Starting a new thread here because I think there may still be more attempts to delay ranked-choice voting in D.C.

It is currently set to be implemented for next June's primary, but some back and forth today makes me think two councilmembers could try to derail that.
Interesting: In testimony to the D.C. Council about implementing ranked-choice voting next year, elections board director Monica Evans says reporting results will take longer, up to 10 days after the election. That's because all mail ballots need to be received before counting.

A councilmember who won his primary last year with 23.7% of the vote wants to delay implementing ranked choice voting. The at-large CM who won her last primary with 35.9% agrees that making her run for reelection next year under RCV would be a bad idea.
Felder continues to be critical of the election board's capacity to pull off ranked-choice voting in 2026.

"Before we roll out something of this magnitude I would think we need to do a needs assessment," he says to Evans. "You’ve been tasked with an arduous task. It’s unfair."

From the beginning, we made clear that the military should not be policing American citizens on American soil.

Normalizing the use of military troops for domestic law enforcement sets a dangerous precedent.

It is long past time to let the National Guard go home to their regular lives and families.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

Normalizing the use of military troops for domestic law enforcement sets a dangerous precedent.

No President should be empowered to disregard states’ independence and deploy troops anywhere — with no check on their military power.

This federal overreach is not normal or legal.
