Do you know if this study look at indoor air pollution/ quality or just outdoor? 🙏
inclusivenew.bsky.social
Important report 🙏. But tricky getting balance right. 'Independent' can also mean an interest-group marks their own homework without quality assurance, meaningful oversight, public accountability, transparency or access, as seems true of the body for Infection Prevention & Control in Scotland.
inclusivenew.bsky.social
But perhaps there are other risks too - people marking their own homework with no independent quality assurance, meaningful oversight, public accountability, transparency or access. That certainly seems to be the case with the body responsible for Infection Prevention & Control in Scotland.

We have to get the corrupting influence of political & commercial imperatives out of 'independent' scientific bodies. Democracies everywhere - if they exist in more than name - should be taking action now, before too late. Like so much learning from the pandemic this continues to be wholly ignored.

🧵🚨

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

Today our report is published!

UK’s arm’s length public bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation
Seven in ten Britons say it is important for top scientific institutions to be independent in exclusive new polling.

⚠️The NHS once protected us.

Now, millions of Clinically Vulnerable people are being told we don’t qualify for a Covid vaccine - even as new variants spread.

This is a dangerous, preventable mistake.

Very helpful thread 🙏

Folks have been asking me which of the currently available UK #COVID vaccines are best, given that an older flavour, "KP2" is being given free on the NHS to the twelve or so people that remain eligible (😜🙄), whilst the newer "LP8.1" is available privately...

I'll do my best...

More evidence of the role of viral persistance as an underlying disease mechanism.
longcovidlabs.bsky.social
🚨Fascinating new analysis from @ucirvine.bsky.social researchers on the possible role of SARS-CoV-2 persistence in Long COVID:

The authors outline several mechanisms by which the virus could remain in the human body and cause disease.

1/
Figure 1 from the paper:

Caption says: Five major mechanisms by which the virus, vRNA, and viral antigens may cause multiple and different pathologies in Long COVID patients. (A) A causative factor in a large subset of patients with LC is that reservoirs of virus, viral RNA (vRNA), and/or fragments may persist in multiple sites of the body. (B) This causes chronic inflammation, overstimulating innate and adaptive immune cells, and providing continuous viral antigenic stimuli to (C) exhausted CD4+ and CD8+ T cells [31,33,34,35,36]. This may result in damage to major organ systems, leading to neurological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, muscular, and psychiatric pathologies [43,44]. (D–F) Other possible causative factors of LC include metabolic disturbances, immune dysbiosis, micro-clotting, endothelial dysfunction [38,43,45,46,47], and the reactivation of HSV-1, HSV-2, EBV, CMV, and HHV-6 [48,49]. This Figure is created using BioRender.

The MILLIONS of people who were denied vaccines are suddenly realising.

@rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social this was a terrible idea.

Not only will the NHS struggle this autumn / winter, but people will suffer and die unnecessarily.

It isn't too late for a U-turn!
Community Pharmacy England

Q

Pharmacy teams have reported major issues to us over the last two days related to large numbers of patients booking COVID-19 vaccinations via the National Booking System (NBS) who are not eligible for the vaccine this winter.

We are working with NHS England to try to address this unacceptable situation and to get more NHS communications issued to help people understand whether they are eligible for the vaccine.

In the meantime, we have created three posters that pharmacy teams can use to help explain about vaccine eligibility this winter:

Well, part of the reason is because Universities and educational establishments in general do absolutely nothing to ensure clean, safe, healthy indoor quality, so it's not just students having a party but airborne infections. No mention of that or the current Covid wave www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Freshers' flu: Why is it so hard for students to dodge?
It's not the actual flu, and it's rarely serious, but when thousands of students arrive on campus they bring a cocktail of viruses.

The (ongoing) adverse impact of SARS CoV 2 on our children is a scandal, particularly when so much could now be done to prevent it. Big week for @cvcev.bsky.social & @longcovidkids.bsky.social at the UK Covid Inquiry. Wishing you the best of luck in forcing those responsible to be held to account 🍀

Now that's a novel twist. Hands up how many of you have recently been to the doctors and asked them questions because you 'became more aware of yourselves' during lockdowns 5 years ago.... 🤔

If you thought you'd heard it all where it concerns explanations for increased demand for healthcare 'post-Covid' without mentioning the health impacts of ongoing Covid, I refer you to Cabinet Sec Neil Gray's response to the Citizen Participation & Petitions Committee yesterday 😕

Hugely proud that our Founder & Director Dr Sally Witcher is be part of this incredible initiative. Keen to know what your priorities would be for action on healthy indoor air. There's a long way to go to get even health, social care & education settings to take this seriously here in Scotland & UK.

This is disgraceful 'reporting' by @bbcnews.bsky.social Six years ago it was not normal for the majority of the population to be experiencing what present as early symptoms of dementia due to cognitive impairment. Surely that's what they should be investigating and reporting on.
