I don’t think they expected to fool people forever, just long enough that it would be too late for them to act. The level of betrayal is staggering, even if it’s not really that surprising. It’s never too late, though, and I think they expected a greater level of complacency than they’ve got.

A lot of people don’t get mobilized or start really thinking for themselves until they are affected directly. It’s the only thing that will push them out of their routine thoughts and behaviors.
