It’s what pathologically manipulative religious leaders do to control their flock: manufacture a set of moral dilemmas so broad and unfocused that everyone is tainted and everyone is carrying enormous shame, everyone’s secretly a witch & terrified of being found out. So they toe the line.

If you don’t have an enemy, invent one would work better universally if 1. It wasn’t blatantly obvious it was made up and 2. If “the enemy” didn’t encompass literally more than half the population. They are evil, but also bad at it. It’s embarrassing.

And sometimes that leads to a mismatch between what is happening and how we respond to it, what we are willing to accept and what we reject. It’s happening right now in the US.

And how much pain could be avoided if we were able to let go of the schemas built by past trauma and heal.

I appreciate your perspective & I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m saying the way we understand what is happening to us and how we react on a social/cultural level has as much to do with our history and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are as a people as it does with the current moment.

Hallmarks of totalitarianism. The willful neglect, irresponsibility, and unconscionable harm inexorably leading to the mistreatment and deaths of millions are unique in this case only in that the most horrific crimes are mainly being perpetrated on foreign soil. (So far). The cruelty is the point.

I’m curious about how we break down the unconscious assumptions and rules that shape how we understand and react to situations (across generations).
On a social/cultural level, we tend to reflexively frame our experiences, placing ourselves in the same dynamics and systems, over and over again.

If it were that easy to change human behavior, and our apparent drive to re-live the same tragedies over and over again, sometimes as perpetrator, sometimes as victim, we wouldn’t have these issues. For some reason, it feels like the core issues remain unresolved.

There is no reward to bending the knee to a bully. They like easy targets, and compliance just makes you an easier target.
Maybe being synchophantic has rewards I’m unable to recognize but I’m not sure it’s worth the ethical cost.

They don’t see a problem playing with his likeness because he’s not a real person to them. Most of them probably consumed his movies outside of the moments when they were created, so young Robin Williams is as real and current as old Robin Williams. He exists outside of real time and space. :(
