Scum manifesto

During December, 1937, it became necessary to drain the digester at the Terminal Island Sewage Treatment Plant, in the harbor district of the City of Los Angeles, in order to repair the scum breaker arms, which had collapsed on account of heavy accumulations of scum. The plant had been put in operation in September, 1936, and had been in service about fourteen months. It treats the domestic sewage of San Pedro, Wilmington, and Terminal Island, as well as the industrial waste from two fish canneries in Wilmington. It is believed that the fish waste, high in oil and solids, caused the unusual amount of thick, tenacious scum.

The Dallas area Palestinian Youth Movement reported yesterday that Ya'Kub Ira, an activist and martial arts instructor, was abducted by ICE despite Ira's legal status under DACA.

(context for my boost: I'm white, I use Mastodon since late 2022. I want it to be better than it is but I've stopped feeling like I can recommend it in good conscience to folks who are likely to catch shit there without full disclosure about its shortcomings)

My union—the LA Times Guild—has authorized a strike with the support of 85% of our membership.

This comes after years of brutal layoffs and no cost-of-living raises since 2021.
