This time, the wait isn’t long - Stede is back the very next day, bringing the sun into the otherwise muggy morning.

He orders another latte - hazelnut this time, and Ed loves that his order is different every time; it’s lovely to have regular customers and know their orders by heart, but it’s also nice for someone to want to try things from the special menu Ed changes every other week.

Setting the mug and the scone Stede had also ordered on the little table in front of him, Ed’s fingers accidentally graze Stede’s hand and his heart, less accidentally, blossoms.

“Coming right up!” Ed gave the customer a big grin.

“Name and number?” Annie asked.

“Sorry?”

“For the cup.”

“I’m the only one here?”

“Company policy.”

“Stede, +64 173- wait, why do you need my number?”

“And are you out, Steve?”

“It’s Stede.”

“Please ignore my coworker, Stede, she’s unwell. Here you go - no, it’s on the house. Just promise you’ll be back in less of a rush next time.”

“I promise!” Stede returned Ed’s smile, grabbed the cup and hurried out, Ed watching him leave again through the shop window, but feeling much better about it this time around.

It’s been a week since the beautiful blonde visited Blackbeard’s and Ed still couldn’t stop thinking about him, to the point of confiding in Annie about it.

“Even if you’re right, so what?”

“So this time you’ll open your mouth and ask for his number. Or drop to your knees and open your mouth and-”

The door opened just as Ed threw a rag at Annie. Speak of the devil.

“Excuse me, hi, sorry, I’m afraid I’m in a bit of a hurry again, could I get a turmeric latte to go please?”

By the time Ed looks up from the register, the cute stranger is already halfway down the street. He just left the biggest tip Ed has ever gotten. The money would mean a lot back when he had to keep his belt tightened, but business has been blooming for years and what he really wanted from the man was his phone number. Or another smile. Ed’s always been super smooth picking up guys, but this sunshine of a man managed to completely fluster him and he couldn’t get a word out. And now he’s gone. Probably forever. Good job, Teach.
