Also the suits themselves are beautifully practical; it takes more officers to tackle/restrain a giant inflatable frog, and the outfits themselves do a solid job of deflecting pepper balls/canisters.

It's a Saw like scenario. Joel's trapped on the SOL, with a corpse (prior test subject?) handcuffed to the main chamber. Over the course of his imprisonment, he manages to cobble together several robots from a bin of spare parts to pilot the SOL back to Earth.

The corpse suddenly gets up...

I think even with "giving it to him for being elected", context should be considered; Bush had started two wars and damaged a lot of America's relationships with countries in Europe. Obama campaigned on undoing that. Regardless of what came after, his election felt like the start of something new.
