...the civil unrest and cultural changes in the 60s & 70s or was it just a the freedom to make these kinds of movies now free of the recently retired Hays Code? There's an argument to be made that all cinema got not just more violent but gorier, think the Godfather, Deliverance, Jaws & the Exorcist

one caveat though - the first introductory chapter is a little boilerplate - slashers were a response to vietnam/watergate/disillusionment w authority etc. nothing you haven't already heard. I'm just a couple issues before you!! Captain Carrot #3. They sold them at newstands then, I was a kid & the costumed animals hit me right in the sweet spot. I think DC is doing an OK job of bringing in young readers but books like CC are the perfect gateway drugs! I got hooked on comics for life!!
