About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages
Business Insider headline reads: UPS is telling customers that their packages coming to the US are marked for destruction.

❤️ this from @awalkerinla.bsky.social: “Maybe when people land at LAX, we have them scan a QR code that introduces them to their local forecast communicator, checks if they need emergency translation services, signs them up for NotifyLA, and automatically installs the Watch Duty app on their phone.”

When I led a parking study for downtown #Berkeley, café owners told me they couldn’t put tables and chairs on the sidewalk, because it would increase the number of parking spaces the city required them to provide.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

I will forever believe that “simple brick box” is the ultimate building typology. This one is the Ramble Hotel in Denver’s RiNo Arts District.

✅ Repetitive inlaid windows
✅ Unique first floor with “loading dock” openings
✅ Ornamented brickwork
❌ No “facade modulation”
❌ No stepbacks or setbacks

“The big advantage of bikes is that they go directly from where you start to where you finish, when you need to go. The advantage over cars is that they need perhaps 1/10th of the amount of space. Roads that jam up quickly with cars can carry effectively unlimited numbers of people by bicycle.”
Why e-bikes are more important the EVs
Bikes can actually transform cities in the way driverless cars promise

But if drivers on Wendy are forced to slow down and potentially stop to avoid hitting people walking across the street, it would be a massive inconvenience for those drivers. Whereas if the people on foot have to risk their lives or go out of their way to cross, the flow of car traffic can continue.

Boy, Google's pedestrian directions suck (I see people trying to do this, but it's bound to get you hit by a car). This is NOT AN INTERSECTION, it's mid block. The city really SHOULD add a pedestrian crossing here... but I don't think enough people have been killed yet.. #mapping

It seems to me that #SB79 gives #Stanford a wonderful opportunity. The University’s aging mall and its vast parking lots could be transformed into something better.🧵

This was a bit wild to read when I woke up this morning. tbh I haven't been downtown much since I moved here, but it isn't a lack of interest, just super busy and lots of the places I've needed to visit are SW of the CBD. The cool downtown was one of the things that I loved on my interview visit.

guards ignore—but are trained—that withdrawal is a life threatening condition, and ignoring someone in withdrawal is both deliberate and indifferent

the fact that they were *wrong* about this person’s emergency doesn’t make their conduct any less deliberate or indifferent

249 years ago today: the Battle of Valcour Island took place in Lake Champlain in 1776. It was the first naval battle during the Rev War, in which Benedict Arnold led a small fleet of ships against a larger British flotilla, and fended them off after a heated battle.

Sorry, is there a question here?

27 children died.

Close the goddam camps if you can’t comply with safety measures.

This isn’t the first time flash flooding in this zone has killed campers, just the most well known with the highest death toll.

Texas youth camps say cost of implementing new safety requirements will force them to close

Reports that all CDFI fund staff have been let go. HUD appears to have lost 442 staff.

Yet another federal cut that will make providing affordable housing in the US all the more challenging.
