I think two things are true:

1. young republicans were always terrible and racist

It’s also okay to say “I ignored the inherent racism in republican policies because I only consider slurs and physical action overt.” It should embarrass you that it takes the quiet part being said loud to be considered bad.

This “My buns have no seeds” tactic is a great comedic moment though.

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.

People are allowed to grow and change but it’s weird that you felt the need to immediately jump up and defend them instead of just disavowing them. This is a choice, it’s not youthful indiscretion. They’ll probably triple down now and not change out of embarrassment. Wait…did you “change”?

My parents' generation was super racist, but they took pains to hide it from us. So a lot of young conservatives in the 90s and early aughts were earnest small government and/or evangelical types.

As I said, the overt racists and radicals had to form their own orgs.

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
