I study non-equilibrium quantum many-body physics from a quantum circuit perspective at the University of Nottingham. Also passionate about science outreach! He/him 🌐 jaredjeya.github.io (still a WIP!) PS: All opinions solely my own.

Quantum electrodynamics on a 1D lattice can lead to localization of charges, in contrast to the thermalizing dynamics. This study identifies the origin of such non-thermal signatures and attribute it to the fracturing of the underlying Hilbert space.

Hilbert space fragmentation at the origin of disorder-free localization in the lattice Schwinger model

Yeah, you’re right about that. I just imagine it’ll pop out somewhere and don’t worry too much about it since I’m not in the business of quantum foundations! 😅

Like generally my interpretation of QM won’t affect my interpretation of the phenomena I work with.

Well now you have to call it Bai’s Rule, right?

As a theoretical cosmologist, I'm frequently asked "what is the benefit of the work you're doing for people's lives?" Nothing I work on makes money or cures disease.

There are a few different answers one can give, at various levels of "convincing" / "actually relevant to why the work is done."

And practically, this looks exactly like the Copenhagen interpretation, because you can’t perform a measurement external to the universe - in exactly the same way that subsystems of entangled pure states look mixed. So this is more like my headcanon for why the Copenhagen interpretation holds :)
jaredjeya.github.io
Well, that comes from when *you* are the external DoFs interacting with the system (usually indirectly via a measuring device).

That is MWI, but I personally just hate the framing of it as “many worlds” since that sounds fantastical. It’s just the natural consequence of rejecting collapse!

An interaction with something external to your system. After you trace out the external degrees of freedom, it looks a lot like a measurement.

Dear students, unless UoN commits to rule out compulsory redundancies, I expect my Principles of Dynamics lectures to be affected by @uonucu.bsky.social industrial action next week. I was gonna tell you by email but the uni says we can’t. If you see this, pls let other students know

Just finished the final day of the Nottingham Workshop on Quantum Non-Equilibrium Dynamics!! Lots of great talks, and great discussions too 😄
A photo of one of the talks. People are sitting in chairs watching someone present a talk, specifically Mark Mitchison (KCL) on the topic of process tensors.

I would cry if Wes Streeting became PM. Genuinely one of the most awful people in the Labour Party.

We once had to rewrite a manuscript *after submission* because we discovered a Hamiltonian we took verbatim from a published paper had an error in its derivation! So I feel you 😅

Luckily after rerunning our numerics our results didn’t change qualitatively, so it wasn’t a complete disaster

We have made it clear from the beginning: our industrial action ends as soon as the university agrees to no compulsory redundancies.

This is a demand that the university takes on the responsibility and consequences of their poor financial decisions without putting it on us.

After hearing this news, UCU branch representatives reached out to the university again demanding that compulsory redundancies for our members be suspended. They declined to remove this threat.

It’s a really dire situation in UK academia.

Here at Nottingham, we’re being told to expect 20% cuts across the board. All because the university mismanaged its money: spending millions on a new campus without a plan, that now has to be sold! And now they want £50m more for a new medical building.

Strike action is ON!!!

Next week will be the first of 4 weeks of striking from our members as we continue to say NO to the compulsory redundancies forced on us by the university for their poor financial choices.

Good news. The Royal Society has disgraced itself by keeping one of the most evil people in the world among its ranks.

(In case you need reminding, it's estimated his cuts to USAID had ALREADY killed hundreds of thousands of people by July, and will kill 14 million by 2030)

Mini-scoop: After resisting pressure to strip Elon Musk of his fellowship for months, the Royal Society is meeting on 1 October to discuss his removal – following his decision to address Tommy Robinson's far-right rally on Saturday.

Isn’t Trump proposing a 100% budget cut to climate and earth science? I don’t see how he thinks he can “work within” that.

The British Isles, according to the New York Times.

(I think some of my old colleagues from Leeds might have an aneurysm if they see this!)
A screenshot from a New York Times article:

"I have great sympathy for the police," said Paul Wragg, a professor of media law at the University of Leeds, north of London. He said that the public would likely be…” An outline map of the British Isles. London is labelled, and every other part is labelled relative to London: for example, Wales is “West of London”, Scotland is “far north of London”, and Ireland is “Far west of London”

Students don’t pay the higher fees at university and only pay it back in full if they earn a lot. Raising fees would be akin to increasing grad tax on only the most successful grads - the ones who currently pay off their loans. So affordability doesn’t really come into it, except psychologically.
jaredjeya.github.io
Perhaps we don’t need to understand finances as well as experts, but we do need to understand the basics so we can call management out when they use BS justifications for cuts, or what the best policies for universities are & how to lobby MPs for them!
jaredjeya.github.io
Congratulations! It’s a great feeling :)
