A huge turnout in Nottingham today, around 300 staff and students standing together against cuts.
Powerful speeches, real solidarity, and a clear message: we won’t let our universities be dismantled.

We are the university. ✊if you’ve not voted there is still time! Get it in!

Council is hiding behind locked doors with security guards blocking corridors but they can't escape from the anger of over 200 staff and students condemning management's incompetence and protesting course closures and redundancies.
Who is the university? We are!!

This is what solidarity looks like.

Say it with me- We. Are. The. University.

And we will NOT stop fighting until this administration listens to ALL of us. Staff, Students, and Community are united!

Staff are united against course closures.
Students are united against course closures.
Community members are united against course closures.

When will this university listen?
Nottinghamshire MPs have written to @uniofnottingham.bsky.social, urging the university to reconsider proposed course suspensions and potential closures, which would significantly impact staff, students, and our wider city and county.

Along with our rallies happening today (1 PM) and tomorrow (10 AM), students from the music school have organised additional protests as well. All happening on the south side of the trent building.

Let's show this university how united we are! ✊

Lots to agree with here. And I see they seem to have dropped the "the usefulness of language-learning to communicate is overrated" and the "the reason no-one studies languages is because it's not intellectually challenging" line that the universities took on reforming A Level.

Time for a rethink?
Colleagues and UCU members from UoN's Department of Modern Languages have put together this wonderful guide on supporting their programmes. A lot of what they suggest is also helpful in challenging the 48 courses at risk across the university

The real problem is that administrators view faculty as problems to be solved, too, rather than as colleagues and certainly not as allies. This narrow posture has reinforced their bunker mentality, keeping them from aligning with faculty, consulting world experts among us, and being united.

Even in a crumbling system. Strikes work
In response to our industrial action, the university proposed a resolution that removed the threat of compulsory redundancies for the next year and introduced a negotiation process over course closures. And at our branch meeting, we accepted this offer.

A reminder that industrial action can work, and universty management can negotiate with a union that represents their staff.

At some point universities, including our own, have to learn that this just doesn't work, right?
