This exactly how fascism always works. They make you feel threatened. They tell you the solution is to stop caring about a particular group of people. They strip those people of their rights. They manufacture another crisis to make you feel threatened. Rinse & repeat. In the end they come for you.

Well the slope from “let the elderly and disabled die of COVID” to “let’s trash all the rest of our ethics, morals and laws” was basically a short walk on a flat path wasn’t it?

"Even the May 2025 statement from the House of Bishops fails to denounce with sufficient clarify and force Israel’s sustained and egregious practice of war crimes, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and — as now confirmed by an independent UN commission — genocide". Jonathan Chaplin

Catholics were social justice warriors for centuries before it was disparaged as "woke". The Church preaches compassion & love for neighbours, strangers & adversaries, & will keep on doing so even when fascists are telling people "empathy is a mental illness" & "immigrants don't have human rights."

"Well it was nice while it lasted. We had an unprecedented 10 months of low and stable Covid levels in England - but this is now over. We are seeing a definite, significant wave of Covid infections across England."

The Green Party are STILL the only major political party in the UK with compassionate, science-based policy on #Covid. Schools are not safe for kids & teachers. Workers are forced into unsafe workplaces. CV families still face hatred & exclusion. #LongCovid still destroys lives & livelihoods.

We can keep doing this forever, or fix public health policy. Hospitals are unsafe for workers & patients. We need suitable PPE & clean air standards to stop the spread of airborne infectious diseases. It is a political choice to govern without fairness or compassion.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

We could keep doing this forever, or we could make hospitals safe for workers & patients by mandating clean air standards & providing effective masks to protect against airborne viruses. It's illegal & irresponsible to violate workers rights & ignore patient safety.

The best defense against this weapon is solidarity among groups who disagree ferociously on many questions, but who agree on the need to keep America democratic and rebuild institutions and social connections to make democracy more robust.

The struggle over regime change is about whether the aspiring authoritarians can subdue civil society. Their strategy is to play divide and conquer, rewarding friends and brutally punishing opponents. They win when society cracks, creating a self-enforcing set of expectations.

Power is a “coordination game,” in which everything depends on what the public believes and does together. Even the most brutal tyrant does not have enough soldiers and police to compel everyone to obey at gunpoint. Authoritarian regimes need civil society to acquiesce to their rule.

Important read for opposition actors under autocratizing contexts:

"Trump will fail in remaking American politics if people and institutions coordinate against him, which is why his administration is targeting businesses, nonprofits and the rest of civil society"

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

A judge blocked Trump from sending Oregon's National Guard into Portland.

That same judge then blocked Trump from deploying California's National Guard to Portland instead.

This isn't a "left wing" judge — Trump appointed her.

Says a lot about Trump's authoritarian power grab.

The illegal USAID cuts are the thing that broke me

A complete dismantling of constitutional governance in order to facilitate crimes against humanity

What Trump, Musk, the Supreme Court, etc have done to these families is beyond cruel, beyond heartbreaking, beyond unforgivable

Not sure enough Americans understand why authoritarianism is bad. Fascists are really bad at running the country. They destroy freedom, steal your rights, tell you your neighbour is your enemy, tank the economy & pervert democracy so you can't hold them to account: Nothing is safe in their hands.

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

(1) What did he say that wasn't true?
(2) Where does he say "ACA subsidies are the most important thing"?

Yes we need to articulate the many reasons fascism is bad for the country. But the fact that ~50K Americans will likely die if these healthcare cuts go through is surely one of those reasons?

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.
