I was a bit surprised this paper didn't cite Epperly et al (2020) which theorizes about the link between disenfranchisement and decline in violence. The confederate monuments only really started accelerating in the Jim Crow era.

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.

Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).

There are variations in the extent of disenfranchisement in the South, which could be driving this.

Even during Jim Crow when there was essentially full disenfranchisement of African Americans in much of the South, the Republican Presidential candidates still managed to get ~30% of the vote. It is unclear to me who the voting base for the Republicans was in the South at this time.

Trump is trying to amass coercive power and particularly the military, clearly intends to use it to increase federal (=his own) control over states.
