Would Trump be constitutionally eligible to become someone else's vice president if he's already been elected twice as president? Most legal scholars say no. A few believe it's a loophole, but obviously, it's never been tested. It would be very, very, very difficult to make that case in the courts.

Let's say Trump serves out his second term and then gets elected as someone else's vice president. Some people claim that Trump could, in theory, serve up to two years as president of the remainder of that person's term. Because it doesn't exceed ten years total in the office.

Okay, what does that mean for Trump?

He's been *elected* twice as president. He cannot be elected a third time, full stop. At the end of his second term, he'll have served eight years. He cannot serve more than ten as president, full stop.

There is a legally dubious scenario, however...

But if the remainder of their term in which they become president through succession is more than two years, that means being elected to two more terms becomes incredibly murky, if not impossible. Because that second elected term would exceed a total of ten years.

For example: let's say a sitting vice president becomes the president because that office is vacated (death or resignation). If there are fewer than two years left in the term, that VP can absolutely can be *elected* to two more terms because their total time in office wouldn't exceed ten years.

First, some background. The 22nd Amendment specifically forbids:

-- any individual being *elected* to a third term as president

-- any individual serving more than ten years total as president, so serving more than two years of someone else's elected term restricts future eligibility
