The utter inability of legacy news media to be able to deal with being straight-up lied to is one of the primary drivers of this mess.

I like how the news will be like “while the President claiming Portland was ruled by a giant skeleton named Mr Nibbles is not strictly true, it does speak to the anxiety of many Americans”

Saw the U.S. flag at half-staff at a Chick-fil-A this morning. Because Trump didn’t get the Nobel?

If you plan to eat at the Silver Diner at BWI, think about taking a sandwich along, lest you faint from inanition before seeing a server.

Reuters photographer Jonathan Ernst noticed that Bondi flipped open a file during the Senate hearing and he zoomed in.

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

The GOP now practicing Cliff's Notes Fascism

In other words, under oath Bondi was purely a performance.

This is true for students too. Yes there are many factors impacting student reading, but working 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college is definitely one of them.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

AOC: "Stephen Miller is a CLOWN. He looks like he's 4’10”. He looks like he's angry about the fact that he's 4’10”. He's taking that anger out at any other population possible. Like, LAUGH AT THEM. Laugh at them."

I have written my blog for 20 years. Writing at The Baltimore Sun, I omitted it, for house style. Writing on the personal site, I used it, for personal preference. In 20 years no reader has complained about the presence or absence of that comma in one of my posts.
johnemcintyre.bsky.social
As a practical matter, the presence or lack of a final comma is invisible to nearly all readers and a source of tedious discussion to a few.
johnemcintyre.bsky.social
Using the serial comma is either a personal aesthetic choice or deference to a particular style guide. So is its omission. Ambiguity is so easy that both omission and use of the serial comma can lead to it. (More in comments.)

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

Today's Pleonasm Award goes to outlets that referred to Thomas Jacob Sanford, who attacked the Mormon church in Michigan, as an "armed gunman." (Thanks to Steve Auerweck for the reference.)

That word "proximity" means "proximate, next, or very near (as in time, place, relationship) : immediate or close propinquity," or, in a word, closeness. When you find the word "close" in propinquity to "proximity," be a love and rip it out.

Dispensational premillennialism is evidence that the Fathers blundered when they voted Revelation into the canon.

Rich people saw before Covid that climate change would kill billions. They're following the idiotic "Don't Look Up" playbook ever since: they think pushing as many poors as possible off a cliff while building their bunkers will save them. That's wrong. Only cooperation could (have) worked.

We really can’t understate the psychic toll of knowing that the United States government is trying to kill as many people as possible

If you can’t bring yourself to boycott Disney, at least don’t post about your trips on social media. You no longer have the choice of being apolitical. Being neutral in the face of fascism is collaboration. I’m sorry that it was ruined for you, but it was ruined.

I overlooked that yesterday was Samuel Johnson's birthday. Let's remember one of the most concise and durable of his observations: "We are more pained by ignorance, than delighted by instruction."

It is the job of the Democratic party to sell and defend the policies that most Democratic voters want, not to present a candidate slate that is palatable to moderate Republicans who might switch if they hate their own candidate enough.

crazy to see the "Rainbow Coalition" party come to this. Vocally and Publicly blaming their own voters and grassroots organizers rather than admit their centrist strategies are failing, and have been failing bscl since Clinton left office.
