I think tbh there's a broader point about Europe not having barriers, the same reason it was an outrage Ukrainians couldn't get EU visas for years. I don't think it's good to say 'well, that bit in the corner we won't worry about, because reasons'. Europe whole and free. End of.
jonnyhibberd.bsky.social
Well I mean, only if they actually want/need to come here but many still do

I was one of those citizens and haven't changed any of the long-standing opinions I held from that time. I don't demand anything is given to the UK without the EU benefitting in return. I just hope the relationship now moves forward.
jonnyhibberd.bsky.social
Of course, once independence happens the SNP becomes just another party, which the electorate can ditch as they wish.
jonnyhibberd.bsky.social
It certainly could be. The argument is stronger for as long as the UK maintains its barriers with the rest of Europe.
jonnyhibberd.bsky.social
There's a tendency for Scottish/Welsh independence advocates to argue in a similar way to Brexit i.e. a magic bullet for their problems and a lack of willingness to address difficult questions. However, there are many small states in Europe doing well these days and they aren't unicorns in a forest

Likely another EUCO declaration at EU-26 incoming, with no lifting of the formal Hungarian veto in sight:
jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social
The latest #EUCO conclusions praise Ukraine's efforts to advance accession negotiations and express readiness to open three clusters:
- Fundamentals
- Internal market
- External relations

However, the entire process remains firmly blocked by Hungary.

I've long said the Lib Dems should have a more flexible attitude to this issue.

Tell me your most unhinged Doctor Who opinion. I mean, if you’re a fan, they’re likely all unhinged anyway.

They should've run to 13 doctors and ended it. They should end the tv series and reboot it as a film franchise.

Ok...

Meanwhile, in real life.

Brigadier General Serhiy Lysak has been appointed head of military administration in #Odesa, thus (eventually) replacing Gennady Trukhanov as Mayor now his citzenship removal prevents him holding political office.

I did and it demonstrably isn't true, as we can currently see.

A huge mistake of the collective west of the past 25 years has been pushing Serbia away and failing to engage with its moderates and liberals. When the bad actors are in power you should still reach out to the good actors.

The EU membership offer is an opportunity.

It is the promise of peace, prosperity, solidarity.

Together, we overcame the 2022 energy crisis.

Today, the EU will continue to help keep Serbia safe during the winter.

This is what it means to be a reliable partner.

Because Hungary, Slovakia and so on are so reliable 🤔

EU membership is an opportunity, only available to reliable partners.
So, England can forget it.

No just stuff Niall interprets as 'exceptionalist'. If I'm guilty of exceptionalism it's probably from the Romani part of my ancestry. We were doing free movement before it was cool.

For my A level English lit I read, amongst other things, Paradise Lost, James Joyce's Dubliners, Marlowe's Dr Faustus and Wharton's Age of Innocence. I'm quite looking forward to discussing these with migrants

“Make Brexit work” by raising taxes to stem the ongoing losses.
Slavish devotion to failed ideology has a very high price.

"There is no doubt that the impact of Brexit has been severe and long-lasting", Rachel Reeves tells Sky News, as she suggests that taxes will now have to go up as a result to "make sure the numbers add up".

Just booked an advance train ticket from Zurich to Feldkirch (Liechtenstein away 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿⚽️). Is it normal in that part of the world that there's no seat reservation given?

I don't think anyone's misled here. It's a faux crusade that's really about gloating at people that don't have an EU passport, and an obsession with forcing collective responsibility onto people who had nothing to do with Brexit, and projecting a stereotype onto anyone from the UK. Nothing deeper.
jonnyhibberd.bsky.social
I don't endorse Andrew's ideas as such, I just don't buy the idea the EU is so fragile it needs defending from someone voicing an opinion on Bluesky. Niall screenshotted me just for having abstract conversations of interest about the EU/Europe,as if it's not allowed because I have the wrong passport
